Official Mortal Kombat Website Re-Launches Later Today

Since the debut of <a href="http://www.TheMortalKombat.com">TheMortalKombat.com</a> back <a href="http://www.trmk.org/news/12940/netherrealm_studios_to_release_mortal_kombat_in_march_2011.html">before E3 earlier this year</a> it served mostly as a placeholder site for the game. Last week <a href="http://www.trmk.org/news/13209/changes_abound_on_official_mortal_kombat_website.html">a counter appeared on the website</a> and it slowly counted down until this week.

We are expecting to see the new <a href="http://www.TheMortalKombat.com">TheMortalKombat.com</a> go live later today. <b>WB Games</b> was happy to pass along to us a Press Release that detailed the upcoming website and what this new website will do. The website will offer detailed backstories of some of the many characters to be appearing in the game, six characters to start with. The website will also be the place to catch the newest episodes of the MKast video podcast. Also continuing the tradition from Midway.com, there will be a new Discussion Board along with a new "Kombat Chat" for live discussions about the game. New content updates to be delivered each and every <b>Mortal Monday</b> going forward.

Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are unleashing an all-new website for the highly-anticipated video game Mortal Kombat releasing in 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A first for the franchise, <a href="http://www.themortalkombat.com">www.themortalkombat.com</a> will showcase six legendary characters including Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Mileena giving fans an unprecedented look into their unique history and backgrounds. The site will also feature a full arsenal of kommunity features including: MKasts, discussion boards and Kombat Chat. The site will be updated every Monday in conjunction with Mortal Mondays.

Mortal Kombat also has a vibrant community on Facebook featuring an all new asset packed Facebook app as well as an active community on Twitter. We are excited to see what else this website will offer as the release of the game gets closer. We also hope to see some form of online stats and fight history, much like the great <a href="http://www.bungie.net">Bungie.net</a> in the future once the game is released.

<b>Update 10PM CST</b>: The website, <a href="http://www.TheMortalKombat.com">www.TheMortalKombat.com</a>, is now online! It seems the user registration, discussion forums and chat did not make the cut in this release of the website. My guess is those were the problematic pieces and have to be saved for another day. Also the site is experiencing really heavy usage right now, so it's in a constant state of flux. So until then, here is a picture of the main page once you log in as Scorpion:

I had some questions for them, regarding gameplay, via twitter.

I never knew how a website would serve as an announcement for a game, that'll be a proper press release sent out to everyone. Likely some magazine/major website will get the exclusive unveil.
 
Raiden is wearing an updated MK2 costume!!! Awesome! And I see the Hell level behind Scorpion.


LOL. There is another countdown ending November 1, 3pm Eastern U.S. time!

It also says to register, but then the next screen it says that registering is coming soon.

CHARACTER HISTORY BIOS:

Shao Kahn History:

Known for his viciousness, cruelty and intimate knowledge of the black arts, Shao Kahn strikes fear in anyone he encounters. So mighty is this Emperor of Outworld that he intimidates even the powerful Shan Tsung. Shao Kahn incorporates his incredible strength around a single purpose: to merge all the realms into Outworld. He envisions himself the tyrant ruling all that exists. And to that end, he destroys anything in his path with a lust for killing that takes the breath away from even the fiercest warrior.

Raiden History:

Alive from the beginning of time, Raiden is unlike the mortal beings he confronts. He possesses a perspective that gives him the wisdom to win in combat as well as the hint of immortality that suggests he is impossible to destroy. God of thunder and protector of Earthrealm, Raiden possesses supernatural abilities, such as the ability to teleport, fly and control lightning. A cunning warrior and, at one point, a wise mentor to Liu Kang, Raiden functions on a more enlightened plane of existence than mere mortals. There is no battle too challenging for him, since he relies on both inner strengths, physical prowess and the wisdom of the ages to slaughter his enemies and leave an ocean of blood in his wake.

Mileena's HISTORY

Mileena is the mirror opposite of kindly Kitana, even showing fangs when she opens her mouth in contrast to Kitana's pleasant smile. Cloned from Kitana by Shang Tsung, Mileena was created to serve Emperor Shao Kahn. She believes that her birthright is to be the princess of Edenia. Unfortunately for Mileena, her sister Kitana is the legitimate princess. The only answer for the ruthless Mileena is to murder her sister, usurp the throne and rule with the same vicious spite that defines her life. A man-eater, Mileena uses her sexuality as one of her many weapons. She brings men to their knees in more ways than one—and then gives them the kiss of death!

SUB-ZERO'S HISTORY

Clad in blue, this formidable assassin began his deadly path on a mission from the Lin Kuei to murder Shang Tsung. That's when he was killed by Scorpion only to reappear as Noob Saibot, with his younger brother taking on the identity of Sub-Zero. Now he emerges with untold secrets of the afterlife propelling him fearlessly into the bloodiest battles. Time and again, he assaults the confidence of his enemies with his resurrected strength and sense of deadly purpose. Creating dismembered bodies and broken spirits wherever he goes, he threatens the very notion of peace on earth with his awe-inspiring destructive energy.

SCORPION'S HISTORY

Scorpion was killed—but that didn't last for long. He emerged from the grave to enact his vendetta against Sub-Zero, his nemesis who was responsible for murdering him and his clan. Empowered by righteous fury, the ninja Scorpion inflicts the most excruciating pain possible as he scours the earth to annihilate his enemies. He says menacingly, "Get over here!"before he wields his mighty weapon and pulls them to him. Screaming and pouring blood from their gaping guts, they stare into his merciless face as they suffer an agonizing death.

CHARACTER UNLOCK BARS

There will be special bars on each character page to show various videos or images about the character. These are currently blocked by a "Coming Soon" image, so you can't quite see them. Each one has a unique tag line (Get Over Here for Scorpion, or Dead Man Walking for Sub-Zero) for each character along with six circles that will link you to hidden content once unlocked.

KOMBAT CHAT RULES (thanks whtillnvrb)

The more you talk about your favorite character on his or her discussion board, the more power they accumulate. If your character gains more power than any other character at the end of each countdown, you will unlock a piece of exclusive content about that character.

So that means the more support a character gets on the website, the more unlocks for that character. Very cool concept!

TEST PAGE DISCOVERED

There appears to be a test page online in this new site. For whatever reason it was not removed. It gains you access to things like the Easter Egg to the right of Scorpion's hand. Most of everything else is removed and not working, as it's just a test site.

WALLPAPERS

On the test page the first of six unlockable items on Scorpion's page is a custom wallpaper. It reveals a test wallpaper image that is NOT supposed to be live, as you can see by the Lorem Ipsum on the page. Here is the image:

After finding the first wallpaper, I just changed the URL to add a 2 and found a second one.

WEIRD EXTRA WALLPAPER

While messing around with file names, I tried to accidentally access Scorpion's Wallpaper "scorpion_wallpapper_01.jpg" on a non-Scorpion folder and found this interesting Wallpaper image. This file exists under all the folders that are not Scorpion. A clear copy/paste error early on.

Wait a god damned minute.... Sub-Zero's bio includes Noob-SAIBOT! Not trying to get everyone worked up, but wasn't there a reason Noob Saibot became Noob-Smoke in the past?? Maybe I'm just over-reacting.

LOL. Now both SubZero and Scorpion are back from the dead (killed by each other), and still want to kill each other again.
