so i have played mortal kombat pretty much since about when it started but never anything like competitive or really even completely serious. So i have decided i want to starting actually trying and learning characters on MK9 and i am hoping w/e comes after ^_^ My questions are these.
1) so what character(s) would u say to start on learning combos and such?
I am not looking for the top tier or anything like evo or anything lol
2) here is the list of characters i like so if someone could rate them on difficulty in learning that would be greatly appreciated.
this list is in no particular order btw.
Reptile, Sindel, Smoke, Rain, Freddy k, Sheeva, Noob Saibot, Jade, Kano, and Stryker.
i know this is a lot of questions/stuff to read but anything advice on learning combos/chars and such would help a lot! also the title says new(ish) since i guess in a way i am new to all this lol. thanks in advance.
(oh i play PS3 if it matters) i thought i would add that i am not a total newbie i mean i know the controls and things like that but anything technical i wont know lol

You can start by using any character you want, but I don't recommend starting with Sindel, Sheeva, Jade or Stryker as they are quite hard to win with at the start because their tools aren't very obvious, you have to think a lot (Not saying you don't have to think with your other characters but with these you have to think a bit more). If you don't mind trying other characters Scorpion and Kung Lao are good choices as they have accessible tools.
When you're learning a combo its best to learn it in parts as its a lot easier this way because you're not cramming all of the information in your head at one time. Also you have to learn how to use the combo its no good learning a combo if you don't know how to use it. You need to think "What situations should I use it in?", "Is the starter string safe on block?" Things like that. You shouldn't be looking for just damage either; you should look at what position it leaves you in, If you're fighting a character like Noob that thrives at full screen you shouldn't use a move at the end of a combo that knocks him full screen. Also you shouldn't base your game solely on combos, theres a lot more to this game than combos.

wow yeah thats good info! yeah i know combos arent everything as i do play a lot of fighting games XD hmm well out of the chars i chose do u see one thats maybe a good starter for me? i am not a big fan of scorpion(i know he can be newbie friendly) or kung lao XD yeah i mean i have been looking at some combos and strings/specials on youtube which is good i guess.

1) What character do you like?
If Reptile, Sindel and Smoke are your favorites, I'd say learn them first.
You'll have a fun time learning the characters, when they're characters that you like.
Have an open mind.
Don't be afraid to try NEW characters, because you may end up liking a character in MK9 that you never thought you would before. ;-)

2) Character difficulty can vary, depending on your style.
Rain is a rush-down (better for fighting up close) character, while Noob Saibot is a "zone" (better for fighting further away) character.
It all depends on your style.

The character threads may be more helpful to you than I am, because they are full of individual character combos, match-ups and strategies.
Try hitting up those threads for more help on the individual character that you want:

http://www.trmk.org/forums/forumdisplay.php/58-Characters-amp-Gameplay

The first page in the character's thread usually includes basic and advanced combos in them.
I hope this helps. ;-)

oh cool i didnt know about the char forums i am new lol. i mean i am open to some new chars but i kinda know people i am not a huge fan of and it would be nice to learn a couple so i am not stuck on one cause it would be nice to know different styles.

Don't pick reptile. Everytime you win people send you hate mail and call you a spammer.

Freddy & Smoke, but as Araknyd said you can use any characters you would like to, it just takes more effort to start using certain characters. Oh and I forgot to say, Welcome to TRMK!

>_< people be hatin' lol also it seems the chars i like seem to be like "niche" chars i guess u could say?

LOL.
Use whichever characters you like best.
Haterz are gonna hate, regardless.
People who send hate mail are just pissed that you beat them.
Even so called "spam" is beatable in MK9.

what is freddy primarily? i assume rush down? also in fighting games i always use chars i like even if they arent like the best or even that great lol i guess i just like underused or the "niche" chars XD

He is 100% zoning. The best zoners hands down.

so whats the status with kratos? its hard to find him on tier lists or even lists cause he is only ps3
Hes banned from competitive play, simply due to the fact he's PS3 exclusive. Its not fair when some people play on XBox only. A group of people will not know the matchup and the competition would be unfair.

You can get nuggets of information here, but the best place for sound information i find is:

http://www.testyourmight.com/

You really need to practice and get used to your mains. Know matchups for your mains since certain tactics work on other characters and wont on others. You need to be on the ball at all times and learn what to expect. You need to study what your opponents are capable off as well as your own main. You also need to learn punishers for situations. Study frame data or just learn how long other moves take so you can capitalize.

yeah like i said i am not going for anything too competitive but it would be nice to go online and pose a challenge lol.
Unfortunately there are some aspects of competitive MK you must learn to pose a threat to some people online. Alot of online players have studied things and practiced alot so they will mostly have the upper advantage. Just play more, you will get a feel for things without reading peoples endless opinions or fighting etiquette.

Its probably better to find things out yourself, you will develop your own style and become more of a threat. Many of times i have beaten a skilled player to be thrashed by a newbie because you dont know what to expect.

What console are you on?

Just play the game and try to win even if you have to play lame. Playing lame will make you a better player.

i learned the BNB combos for karatos yesterday. i am not a huge fan of him but he works in the MK game. i think i am gonna try rain next.

My favorite characters are Jade, Kitana, Mileena, and Sindel. Thanks to the latest patch, I'd use Kitana, Mileena, or Sindel in a tag team. Jade is very good but it does take awhile to use her.
