Last night <a href="http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/23052">Bloody Disgusting broke the news</a> that the well received <a href="http://www.trmk.org/news/12938/what_is_the_mortal_kombat_rebirth_viral_video.html">Mortal Kombat Rebirth short film</a> is being made into an online web-series. Bloody Disgusting has an excellent track record for Mortal Kombat film related news, as they were the ones who broke the news of the <a href="http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/18833">Rebirth script being penned by Oren Uziel</a> a year ago. Here is what they revealed about the new web-series:

Bloody Disgusting learned that director Kevin Tancharoen - who directed the awesome online short - will return behind the camera for a 10-episode web series dedicated to the popular video game. Penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing, star Michael Jai White leads the cast as "Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs. Shooting will take place in Vancouver this coming February. Contested expected to be cast are: Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and of course Scorpion. No release date is planned, and there's no word on that R-rated remake. The only plot details we could conjure up is that a few Earthlings will fight to save the planet from Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, two Gods ruling over parallel universes, or something to that effect.

With filming starting next month, we would expect this series to kick off later this year. It's possible the episodes could start showing up sometime in April to coincide with the release of <a href="http://www.trmk.org/games/mortal_kombat_9/">Mortal Kombat (2011)</a>. It is really starting to sounding like 2011 will indeed be the <b>Year of Kombat</b> with the largest marketing push behind a <b>Mortal Kombat</b> game since <b>Mortal Monday</b> back in 1993.

Here is the original <b>Mortal Kombat Rebirth</b> short below:

This is awesome news :) So happy they are pursuing that "trailer" further. Can't wait to see how it turns out, and yes this is the year for MK yay!

I'm actually pretty excited about this. I don't like who they have playing Jax, but still. I enjoyed everything else in the trailer. Should be an interesting take on the MK story.

They have an actual martial artist playing Jax, why not him? No beef just asking.
I hope that now that WB is in it they don't try to tame it.

I just didn't like this portrayal of the MK universe, as a "realistic" universe.

Reptile was some guy with a disease?
Baraka was a surgeon that went mad, and implanted blades in himself?
What's next?
Sub Zero as a ninja who suffers from hypothermia?
Shang Tsung as a witch doctor with multiple-personality disorder?

No Thanks.

I'm not EXCITED but i am interested in seeing more of this just for the sake of seeing from a different angle, a different take.

I mean, if you watched either 2 of those god awful terrible ****ing movies, then i dont see the issue of watching these when they are done.

The first movie was no where near terrible.

I just hope than NR Studio is thinking about DLC alternate outfits from this movie ! It would be VERY KOOL to play Scorpion as a guy in orange suit out of jail !!

MIchael Jai White said it will be 10 episodes following where the trailor left off, and leading into the main film....

awesome

I love the look and feel of the trailer. I think Jax, Sonya, Scorpion and Johnny are great! I think the Reptile and Baraka backstories are terrible though. I'm all in favor of this as long as it not too much of a a departure from the actual MK storyline.

It will be. That's the point. It's his take on the series... putting it in a more realistic setting.

What?! Reptile is just a freak of nature? And Baraka has dreads and is a mad surgeon? This almost sucks as bad as the Professor's forward time machine...:stupid:

I think that this parallel universe idea is actually really good. I mean granted, yeah it looks like it won't be the best thing to ever happen to MK but we're all a little biased here aren't we?
I enjoyed seeing Michael Jai White as Jax. He played Spawn rather well. The script was terrible but he was the best part about that movie.
Looking forward to this.
