Metal Gear Movie

Movie rights are up for sale.

November 29, 2004 - Gaming fans have long salivated over the prospect of a Metal Gear movie. And now it seems that the game's creator, Hideo Kojima, is joining in the anticipation.

Kojima has held tight to the movie rights for years, even after being courted by major studios, but he recently told entertainment industry mag Variety that he may finally be interested in selling the rights.

The third installment in the Metal Gear game series was released last month to critical raves. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater players take on the role of Snake, a member of a covert FOX unit sent to recapture a Soviet scientist who is developing a terrifying weapon.

Kojima believes it's best if any film based on the Metal Gear series stands on its own, unrelated to any of the games' storylines. "Things one can express in a game are different of those in a movie," he says. "It would have to be a very different script, almost a different story."

Nothing is in the works yet, but discussions are sure to get underway soon, now that Kojima has publicly shown interest. As this project develops you can count on IGN to keep you in the loop!

We know you've got plenty of ideas about casting or who should direct, so tell us what ya think.

David Hayter, they model Snake from him. Or maybe hugh Jackman,...not sure. I fear the result of the movie. I want it to be as good or better than the game.

I was thinking Hugh Jackman to play the role of Snake as well. Maybe someone who never acted in his life could play Snake. As long as has the look, the talk and practices his lines and has a good enough build, he can make a name for himself. Give unknowns a chance I say. A good unknown though.

Who COULDN'T play Snake? That guy is the msot generic (though profoundly strange) leading character ever. I could see any of Hollywood's leading men pulling him off, Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Ed Norton, God only knows how many others.

dude ed norton? rethink that one

Dude, Ed Norton can play ANYONE. If he can go from American History X to Fight Club to 25th Hour to The Score to Death to Smoochy, than he can play anyone in my book. Besides, I honestly think he'd make a good Solid Snake. You're thinking about the skinny Ed Norton from Fight Club. Watch American History X, he had to bulk down like crazy to do the other stuff.

True, but Kurt Russel is just way too old at this point. Did you see him in 3,000 Miles To Graceland? Good movie, but he struggled through it.

Avi Arad and Columbia Pictures producing long awaited Metal Gear movie.

Konami will at long last be bringing the Metal Gear franchise to the big screen. Announced at today's Metal Gear 25th Anniversary Party event, the film conversion is being produced by Avi Arad and will be released through Columbia Pictures.

Speaking at the event, series creator Hideo Kojima said that he'd been searching many years for someone who could realize the project. He believes Arad can definitely do it.

Arad, also in attendance, promised to make a fantastic movie that stays faithful to the spirit of Kojima's Metal Gear.

Avi Arad is the man behind the last few Marvel movies. Calling it now: a fake intermission at the start of the Psycho Mantis fight
