Life of Pi is an upcoming 3D fantasy adventure film based on the 2001 highly decorated novel of the same name by Yann Martel. The film is directed by Ang Lee based on an adapted screenplay by David Magee, to be released in November 2012.

The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger.

This movie was very well received at cinemacon for both its 3D visuals and portrayal of characters. Having read the book, I can't wait to see how it transcends into cinema.

So it's about a guy in a boat with different animals?

Thats just a part of it, although a major one. The story compasses almost his entire life but mainly focuses on his experience on the boat, on how he tries to survive and hold onto his sanity and faith.

The book is a timeless classic, its one of those that makes you really think hard and eventually you will have to go by what you choose to believe.
The movie too will most likely follow this route similar to The Fountain and Inception, which left us pondering over the answers.

Its not been rated yet, but the book had a number of gruesome parts, so it may be in the movie as well.

Then I'll watch it. If it's not gruesome, I still might watch it with my sisters, nephew, or even with my patients once they go out in the movies again.

Anyone knows if they are taking a realistic approach or is it fantasy? Cuz it was all good until that alien whale jumped over his boat.

I think they are going for a realistic approach more or less, the whale looked like that due to some special type of glowing algae.

Just saw it, was alright. It captured the spirit and details of the book well, but I expected a lot more towards the end, I felt it wasn't as impact full as the book was.
