Are you high?! What makes you think it's a good idea to have Raiden, Kung Lao, and Jax as DLC instead of being available out of the box?! You know fans will riot over that; especially Raiden, since he's essentially one of the main protagonists of the entire franchise!

As strange as it may seem, I agree with you 100% on this.
With MKX and MK11, it seems that NRS has deemed the must-have characters to sell an MK game as:
- The MK1 original 7
- Kitana
- Kung Lao
- Jax
Everyone else is replaceable on the main roster for MK, but those seem to be their bread and butter characters.

Man..... Jax. Should have been retired from the games 10 years ago. Just some bad GI Joe and a never-seizing roster spot taking futility. SF has really damaged this game in the last 3 entries. I prefer the 3D era mythology-based characters over these new SF

He's enough of a fan favorite to justify a roster spot. That should be reason enough. And besides, Special Forces has been a staple of MK since Day 1.

Technically, Jax is an MK1 character since he was going to be "Kurtis Stryker" until they decided to go with Sonya if I recall correctly. I think Kitana even was in the works during MK1.
Hopefully, it'll just be a soft reboot that kind of skips through time

It's impossible to know where the story will go next. I do feel like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Liu Kang, and Sonya will always return because I view them as the big 5 of MK. They appear in the most games out of everyone else.

Imo, again, it seems like the MK1 OG characters, Jax, Kitana and Kung Lao are the 10 characters that NRS deems "must have" for any MK game.
This is just my assumption going off of MK9, MKX and MK11 where those characters haven't skipped out on a single game. That said, at the Brasil Games Show Boon said that MK11 was the end of this story and MK11 ended with another Armageddon (a temporal one this time).
So, based off of that I'm led to believe that MK12 (whenever it comes) could very well just be another MK9 type of reboot.
The current Trilogy (MK9 thru MK11) lines up with the old timeline if you look at all of the right story mode clues between all of the games and the MKX comics.
- MK9 = MK1 & MKII thru alternate UMK3, Liu Kang is once again killed off (now a revenant and not a Zombie). Which brings us to......
- MKX = beginning is pretty much MK4, then goes off on another tangent with Quan Chi and Revenant Liu Kang (as opposed to Zombie Kang) joining forced to bring Shinnok back, and then we end up with a Deception / Dark Raiden once again promising to do whatever it takes to make sure that no one ever invades EarthRealm again (wonder where I heard that before?).
- MKX Comics = Reiko and Havik are the new Deadly Alliance, with the Blood Magik being the reason for joining forces, rather than Shang Tsung and Quan Chi in the old timeline trying to revive the Dragon King's Army.
- MK11 = now a super powerful being (Kronika instead of Blaze) sets events into motion to destroy Raiden's forces in order to balance things out, but instead ends up causing a temporal Armageddon.
Yet again, the time has been reset, but instead of Shao Kahn being victorious at the end of Armageddon / beginning intro of MK9 it's Liu Kang and Kitana at the end of MK11.

A playable version of Kronika and Onaga should be a DLC. just like Gill and Seth in SF5.
Also, MK11 should have non-playable hidden characters in arcade mode like Reptile in MK1 and Jade, Smoke, and Noob Saibot in MK2.

OK, so if spoilers are true NRS will just reboot the events of MK11 with messing with time travel and Aftermatch 2 will be a reboot of reboot of reboot and true master of puppets will be revealed as... nah, look yourselves into spoilers. Plus, the new rumors about Jade's origin...

It'd be a good idea utilize 3D era characters by having them be possessed by the likes of stronger boss characters from previous MK games or having the abilities of boss characters from previous MK games. Similar to how Zafina (Tekken 7) has the abilities of Azazel (boss character of Tekken 6).
* Li Mei being possessed by Cetrion.
* Ashrah being possessed by Kronika.
* Reiko being possessed by Shao Kahn.
* Any of the other male 3D era characters (such as Taven, Daegon, Kobra, Mavada, Kai, or etc.) being possessed by Shinnok and/or Shang Tsung.
Then we can have Kira replace Kano with similar moves but also be able to summon rockets from the sky.
* Li Mei being possessed by Cetrion.
* Ashrah being possessed by Kronika.
* Reiko being possessed by Shao Kahn.

If we're going back in time for MK12, I'm hoping for some of the characters of Mortal Kombat Conquest series to be playable (such as Vorpax, Tasia, and Siro).
* D'Vorah can be Kreeya, replace Kreeya, or be related to Kreeya. Then she should be completely killed off.
* Kitana, Jade, Tanya, and Mileena can all return in one game again showing how they each grew up together.
* The return of Cetrion and Shinnok should still occur though but this time Cetrion completely being good as she fights Shinnok.
* Khameleon can either be Kiri, replace Kiri, or be related to Kiri. This should show the origin of the raptor race.
* This reboot should occur from the events of Mortal Kombat Conquest to the Mortal Kombat 1 tournament.
* This Mortal Kombat should not have Shao Kahn exist. Instead the major threat should be Onaga.

It's be nice to have Kronika possess of manipulate Ashrah by having Kronika's spirit be Datusha (Ashrah's Kriss/Sword). That same sword is made Ashrah kill Nitara's vampire people, causing the Nitara vs Ashrah rivalry. Kronika can do that but a lot more as Ashrah's sword.
Cetrion should also possess Li Mei (to give her more abilities and make her more interesting).

Unfortunately, I think that a soft reboot will more than likely be the scenario.
Imo, it's very possible for them to do a timeline where GKL wins this time instead of Goro, and now instead of MK1 we have different events taking its place. They could easily have the first 3 or 4 chapters taking place in the GKL era, and then show the current time of what would have been MK1, but in this new altered time.
It would allow them to have human characters like Sonya, Johnny and Jax (maybe Kano stays dead, dunno) without having to explain too much.

No it's not smart, actually. If the Original 7, Kung Lao, Kitana, and Jax aren't playable out of the box at no additional charge, the game will automatically flop, and it would be justification for WB to shut down the Mortal Kombat IP for good.
