For those who either beat or seen the story mode...

I did not played, but I saw all the cinematics scenes in Youtube, and I loved it ! Pretty well done, the way NRS did it: mixing the interaction with cinematics and action, balancing it in a way it's not tiring or boring, and this way, we don't have to wait very long dialogues, but, directly and simple one, fitting the purpose of the mode ..... and between them, lots of fights, we can count at least 64 fights to be done in this mode. Sure, deep and ultra top notch perfomance and hollywood dialogues are not expected, this was never a trademark of MK series, but, what was putt in there, it's OK to me .... the very end, when Sindel becomes crazy , it's pure cool, a little dramatic and nice. The best part of the story to me.

It's cool having entertainment enjoying the story and playing fights on it, since it's the first time we see something like that involving all old characters, sure there is room for improvement in the next sequel games, but, as experimental stuff in MK, it's approved.

Could be cool in the next games, to exist a story mode option to play with the evil guys, and this way, see the story by different perspective, seeing it by the evil side, that could be pretty cool !

Kabal is pure badass, very nice seeing him as normal human, without the burn marks and mask, too bad it's not his alternate costume.

I give a 9/10 !

10. For a fighting game, a game medium where your vantage point is literally out of the way of danger the story is surprisingly immersive, sometimes employing camera techniques used in movies like District 9 and Children of Men to make you feel like you're at street level while the craziest stuff you imagine is going on. The characters have never had more personality, or been more fleshed out. You'll be reminded why you love them in some cases, and figure out why you love them in others.

The Outworld invasion chunk is especially good in my opinion.

Actually, you feel sorry for some characters :

- Kitana expressions are awsome, you can feel his angry, sadness and regret, she surely is one of the main characters in the story.

- You can see all Raiden's desperation about being not able to fix things the way he wants, and see that even him, being a God, can fail and do mistakes.

- Liu Kang is really a hero, sacrificing everything to try to save everyone, he looks real and a very noble and good person.

- Sub-Zero , even in his Cyber form, is heroic and brave, fearing nobody that stands in his way.

- Smoke is impulsive and a little naive sometimes, pretty cool seeing this kind of defect in his personality.

- Johnny Cage is fun as hell, one of the best in story ! Nobody will hate him anymore after seeing him in Story Mode !

And I loved Quan Chi ! He is a cunning smart fox , trickery master and always has a trick or two to go well in all situations and relationships ..... sure his participation in story is not highlighted as Shang Tsung, but, Quan Chi gave the last laugh, he had a wild card all the time .... I confess I never liked him before, but now, he gained my sympathy and now I like him very much as character.

All I have to say is that it is awesome. I am watching it right now. I won't spoil anything.

But I would give it a 9/10 because of two reasons:

1. Some fights seem kinda pointless, I know it's expected in a fighting game but meh. xD
2.
Spoiler:
You don't fight Motaro

I loved the presentation, the animations, acting etc - and the Outworld invasion chapter was awesome! But I HATED the actual story. Really didn't enjoy it at all. The only reason I'll be playing Story Mode now is for the unlocks!

Certain characters' stories just got TOTALLY redone beyond all recognition (i.e. Mileena) and I thought that the massacre scene towards the end was a bit pants. Awesome idea and supposed to be sad and dramatic, but I did replay it a few times and go "Whaaaaaat?".

I know that NRS can't please everyone and I am really impressed by the effort, production values etc... I dunno. For me, the most interesting characters in Mortal Kombat are the supernatural ones - Reptile, Mileena, Baraka, Sheeva etc. And none of them had chapters! And like I say, I hate the new Mileena plotline. I always loved the idea that Mileena, Kitana and Jade were a vicious team of assassins, and that Kitana had no idea who Mileena actually was, or that she was being double-crossed by Jade her whole life. And obviously that wasn't the story this time! I thought that Kitana actually discovering Mileena was cool, but Mileena being all like "Let's be a family!" made no sense, as Mileena (even in the MK9 publicity) has always been presented as being bitter, jealous and vengeful towards Kitana. There was literally no hint at Mileena's rage towards Kitana at all, aside from the one fight where Kitana bests her. She didn't even murder her! Not impressed with that aspect of the plot really.

And Johnny Cage was awesome. I HATED Cage up until this game, now I think he's a legend!

Mileena is pretty childish imature, and totally loyal to Shao Kahn, she seems to be a crazy ***** that act first and do questions later, so, I expect her to be more developed in personality in the next game, since, according the plot we have in this story mode and the ending, I think there is room to Mileena replaces Shao Kahn as Outworld empress, at least, for some time ..... it's even hinted in story that she could take automatically Shao Kahn's place if he is dead .....

So, basically, Mileena had not time in story to develop more personality traits, at least, the way NRS changed drastically her function presented in story mode ..... Kitana robs the scene as the main female, but I think next game, Mileena has chance to be a much more deep character, let's see.

Nightwolf is an important and courageous character in Story Mode , the guy has balls ...... they way he faced Noob and Sindel is pure badass, he always looked as a boring character before, but, this time, he shows that he is a tough guy, with no fear to face evil forces stronger than him.

I think it would be interesting for Mileena to have some character development in the next game. Have her go from a spoiled, bratty, and childish leader, to a mature and responsible empress.

10. We finally get some personality and character from the... Characters. The story is immersive and highly interesting, making reference to things from all the games. They didn't just ignore the previous games, I like that. Nothing was really retconned. In fact, now I know some things still have to happen.

Spoiler:
Shinnok still intends to invade earthrealm, Onaga will still probably trick Shujinko and his egg is still waiting for a host, and Armageddon has been planned for many years. It hasn't been prevented, all that's been prevented is a victory by Shao Kahn's hand.

i hope the story turns a different path. forget onaga and blaze and all that. whats the reason for a reboot if your gonna do the same thing

The story is amazing. I personally loved and hated the Sindel killing spree scene. It was great fleshing out Kitana's character and seeing how loyal Sindel is, but it was awful watching all my favorite characters get cut down. I got all teary when
Spoiler:
Sub-Zero, Smoke, and Liu Kang
[/QUOTE] died. But overall, amazing storyline for an amazing game. You know Playstation Mag gave it a 9.8! Hows that for a first review!

I would say as far as a normal story a solid 8. But for a fighting game perfect 10. Yea some times its cheesy but, its MK. It doesnt take itself too seriously but it doesnt get all goofy and down right stupid. The twist and turns are very exciting and you think its over about 3 times but they somehow kept it going and it got more and more exciting to the very end. Will definitely play multiple times.

Spoiler (dont know how to make a spoiler thingy): IMO the ending for the story mode where everything concludes seemed more satisfying than the 300th tower challenge.

Edit: I also love how they made Stryker and Kabal complete badasses. The CSZ's change of heart (or whatever he has) was predicted, though, I thought cyrax was gonna be more of a good guy :/

9.5

There has not been any fighting game with such a detailed and challenging story mode. The story is very good, it makes you think and question a lot about what you know about the story already. I'm already dying to know what is gonna happen next, its very good.

The only negative I have is that you don't get much story for the bad guys, it mostly centers around the good guys with some minor bad guy story going on, but not enough. The story revolved around a lot of the good characters, so it wasn't like one character was the focus and everyone else was just side dish, but i thought everyone had a good amount of story to make them somewhat relevant, of course Raiden was the definite lead in this. Again wished more bad guys had a focus, but overall, it was good.

And it also made me a little upset that the good guys always "won", they should do it like in other games where yes, you did win the fighting match, but during a cs after or something it turns out the bad guys win (if that made any sense?)

If you have never paid attention to the MK storyline, you definitely will now! its not just blood and guts, its a good story too lol

I'd say it's absolutely awsome, 10/10.

Spoiler:
Canonic, yes, all MK story becomes clear, we recognize all details, for example, who turned Kabal into a freak, what happened with Jax's hands, etc. And it goes through all MK1-MK2-MK3 stories, with recognizable locations, makes you really feel that.... "Simple-beat'em-up" fighting turns alive.
And... story mode is so kind. As in Arcade you cut and slash enemies into pieces and bloody mess, in Story mode 95% of battels end with no-fatality.
