DLC News: Skarlet's Date, Rain Announced & Compatibility Packs

IGN got an <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1176088p1.html">exclusive look</a> at the upcoming Skarlet DLC for <a href="http://www.trmk.org/games/mortal_kombat_9/">Mortal Kombat (2011)</a>. The article announces that her DLC will become available next week <b>Tuesday, June 21st, 2011</b>. You can watch IGN's Skarlet video vignette below, which also teases <b>Rain</b> and a <b>mystery fourth character</b> as future DLC beyond the <a href="http://www.trmk.org/news/16890/first_dlc_characters_in_mortal_kombat_2011_lady_in_red_kenshi.html"> already announced Kenshi</a>.

Also discussed in the article is talk of free DLC compatibility packs. These will be necessary to play against DLC owners online if you don't want to pay for the DLC character. These packs will not enable the use of the character yourself, but you can play against those who do own it. To entice fans, these packs will come with extra goodies. The Skarlet DLC packs come with Sektor and Cyrax classic <a href="http://www.trmk.org/games/mortal_kombat_3">Mortal Kombat 3</a> skins that were leaked last month.

<b>Update</b>: <b>NetherRealm Studios</b>' Kommunity Manager <b>Rigo Cortes</b> just shot us over renders for the new <b>Cyrax and Sektor Classic Costumes</b>.

<b>Update 6/15</b>: We got the official press release today that has the official price for the DLC characters at <b>$4.99 (or 400 MS points) each</b>.

The first of four new downloadable warriors, the bloodthirsty Skarlet and her vicious fatalities will be available on Microsoft Xbox Live Arcade for 400 Microsoft Points or $4.99 on PlayStation Network starting June 21st. Also available on that date will be a compatibility pack featuring two klassic skins – Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – inspired Cyrax and Sektor.

We also got an update from NetherRealm's Community Manager Rigo Cortes <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/NinjaBoy66/status/81033835793498113">about the UK/EU DLC release date is June 22nd</a>.

Call me optimistic, but I'm hoping the ??? silhouette is just a stand in, and has nothing to do with the actual character...

I want Tanya!!! lol

It's weird that they would charge for the Klassic Skin pack, but then give us eight free skins that aren't already on the disc (two for each compatibility pack, according to IGN).

I'm definitely not complaining, and I'm giving Netherrealm/WB props for ACTUALLY releasing free alternates, but it does seem weird.

I wonder how Kenshi will play, since he is essentially Ermac with a blindfold.
 
The compatibility pack is good and all, but don't you actually have to have a good online server to play online?

I'll definitely download this next Tuesday morning. Can't wait.
 
Any one notice that it says "Also Available On: PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360" on the side? So is it officially announced for Vita?
 
I'll buy her for sure. Maybe the other characters too. And it would only make sense that Rain would be here. I hope the fourth DLC character is at least Tanya, Khameleon, Nitara, or Sareena. But most likely, it will be Fujin, Shinnok, or Reiko. I hope there are more DLC characters than 4 infact. Forget the Klassic pack one btw. I have the costumes I really need from that pack so far (though I wish I have a Human Reptile but I don't play as him much anyways).

ermac and kenshi will play very different. kenshi will use the sword more than his telekinesis.

Rain and Kenshi, on the other hand, I have no plans of getting (especially now that the problem of online play against these characters is being solved via compatibility packs).

If the forth character is Sareena, Tanya, Ashrah, Nitara, or Li Mei, I will be getting that character too, irrespective of price...

by you saying that where anyone can see it just gives them more confidence to charge whatever price they want.

I wish my words had that much weight...

To clarify, with DLC characters which I neither actively like nor dislike (for example Tremor, Havik, Darrius, Frost, Kira, ...) I would be pretty stingy ($5 at most!).

Just for certain, generally disrespected, and even hated, female characters (such as my beloved Sareena) I would be willing to pay something in the range of $20.
 
Psyched for Kenshi. Really psyched for Rain...I'm interested in seeing how they've updated him, but Skarlet is really not grabbing my attention. Like, at all. Still gonna download her, though...I prefer a full roster.

I'm guessing the mystery character is Shinnok or Tanya.

I'm hoping for Robo-Smoke to make a DLC appearance sometime, too.
