Characters to learn for average players. Advice?

I'm not a great player, nor am I a noob, but I'm having trouble learning new characters. Kitana is my main, Sindel I am ok with, Mileena I'm still learning kinda, and Skarlet I gave up on.

What other characters would be good to try next? Sonya and Kabal I seem to be unable to get "a feel" for...

Liu Kang, Jade, Kenshi and Raiden are pretty straight-forward characters. It took me almost no time to learn Raiden, and he's good, Liu kang has the easiest combos and kenshi has a solid and easy stay away game

Sonya and Kabal are probably the two most technical characters in the game, I mean yea.. Anyone can play a standard Kabal and Sonya, but playing them to their full potential takes hard work and dedication, both characters are real execution heavy.

What type of character were you looking at to main, Rush down, Keep away or a mix of both?

A mix, I think. I adore Kitana because her style feels natural to me. I like to see fans flying all over the place or her zipping across the screen to get away from or close to someone. Her combos also flow very nicely.

Sindel seems more of a keep away character to me, so I rely on sending fireballs in every possible direction, but I like to be aggressive too, which I can't do with the Queen like I can with the Princess.

I thought Skarlet would be the next one to be both, but I just can't grasp her. I can fling daggers all over and close in with the Red Dash, but after that I get my tush handed to me when close up.

I like Mileena, her play style seems like a good fit for me, but she's more complicated than she seems. Kenshi...eh he doesn't flow well in my hands but I get why he has a strong keep away game.

I never thought of Jade or Raiden. I may have to play around with them.

Sektor is perfect for you my man.

A very strong rush down, fast character, great zoning and simple combos that yield high damage.
His only problem is weak defenses.

Well, I would stick with Mileena.

I'm not about to write a essay on why but read my guide instead.

She can lame it out against certain characters, but she's best at forcing the opponents to make mistakes and makes the best out of each situation.

How do you think I learned Mileena so far? ;-)

@back,back,back,low punch: Eh, Sektor is not for me based on his poor/non-existent defense, but I may give him a-go just to make sure.

Yup! I read the 2.0 version and learned the U+4, U+4, B+1, 4, Roll string from it. After that get lost, but I got that string down which is more than I had before reading the guide! :)

Good to know that you learned something from it, if you need for me to break things down or just advice PM me. I'm on here everyday and willing to help another Mileena player ;]

Thanks. Once I got the terminology down (whiffs, buffs, OP, nerfs, pokes, footsies, et al), I could understand any guide better. I'm a casual player, but I like to learn more than two characters; be more well-rounded. It makes the game more enjoyable for me.

I tried so much with Skarlet but she is too much. Jade is my main though she isn't easy to play as. So I will say that Kitana and Sindel are very easy and Mileena is also very quick so she shouldn't be too hard now.

I may make a terminology guide soon before MK10 comes out so people can understand and read Character guides better, but it's best to get an understanding of all the characters play style so you're prepared for any situation in game. I main 4 characters; Mileena, Kitana, Sub Zero and Scorpion but I know most of the match up knowledge against most of the kast with each one.

That would be cool buttheres a Wikipedia page on it in the meantime, thats pretty spot on to be fair

Im sure there are problems, but i found it a good read

I probably already know the answer to this, but I'll ask any way. What is the consensus on Stryker and/or Rain? Stryker I love as a character because he mirrors my personal life/interests, but he seems clunky and slow as a fighter. Rain...I think there's potential, but I don't know why I have such a block on using him.

I was up most of the night in practice mode using Mileena. The more I use her, the more I really like her than I did at first.

skarlet is the most technical. IMO

Even I have problems with her execution. I can imagine casuals trying to pick her up lol.

Raiden is super easy and has really simple bread and butters.

A character like stryker feels slow and clunky but everyone has their moves that a safe on block and quick.

He also uses gun cancels to bait attacks and make them block.

Yes I was training with Stryker recently lol. Friend is learning him.

Poopingtoad plays a good Stryker. He used him against Squirrelpion this one time and made us both go WTF because he raped him so quickly and it was unexpected because almost no one uses him. Definitely a wild card character.

That is why I kind of like Stryker as a character to learn: The wild card factor. People seem to "play it safe" with the usual suspects: All the male ninjas with an occasional Johnny Cage or Kung Lao tossed in. If I use a not-so-popular character like Stryker, I usually win if not by skill but through the element of surprise.

Skarlet I love as a character too. Good back-story and her move set is well rounded...BUT...the up/down slashes are atrociously slow and only having unlimited meter for ex slashes makes them viable unless I'm a complete tool and missed something. Her wake up attacks don't seem too help/useful either. Again, maybe it's me.

Right now though, Mileena has now joined Kitana as a main of mine. I need to up my Sindel game and be more proficient with her. Then, maybe I'll take a stab at Raiden, Smoke, or even Stryker.

Skarlet is one of the best characters in the game IMO.

She can do like 40% meterless and 50% meterless in corners.

She has a standing reset.

She has some of the best pressure tools in the game.

She has a 50/50

She doesn't have to commit to a full jump

I'd say her only weakness is she needs to burn meter alot more than most other characters (But she gets it back fast when she's on the offensive)

And her wakeups are kind of bad.
