Anyone Else Disappointed With the Story Mode?

Oh i loved the way D'Vorah slayed both Baraka and Mileena i can't argue with that, they were two epic moments!

Most of my issues with the story are very minuscule, as it's just things that were kinda overlooked:

-Kotal Kahn's takeover happened in the span of just minutes. It wasn't even entirely planned, Mileena just heard them talking smack then Kotal and friends beat them up and Kotal was made ruler. I think it would have been much better if Kotal was given a flashback chapter where you played as his early self, and you went through events that lead to him overruling Mileena.

-Sonya beating up Quan Chi was to keep Johnny from becoming a revenant, but after she steps on his gonads, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Jax are all freed from his control, yet when he is decapitated by Scorpion, the other revenants are not freed. You can argue that it was Quan Chi's will that was needed to free them, since (I forgot who) was telling Scorpion that, but Sonya beating the mess out of him seemed like they were freed by force. It's not like Quan Chi told her to stop, and then freed them by his own choice.

-When D'Vorah beats Rain and Tanya, she was going to kill them but Cassie steps in and stops her, yet when Mileena is being executed Cassie and others don't do a thing about it, and Cassie just simply makes a, "That's gross" comment.

-I feel there's a little inconsistency with the revenants. Liu Kang's revenant seemed completely self-aware along with Kitana's, but others sounded like they were fully being controlled, like the simplicity of Jax's wanting to kill Johnny and Sonya. But when Kitana's mentions that she can't be pushed around anymore, Jax's response makes it seem like it's Kitana's true words. Also since Jax was a revenant himself, it just seems more likely that they are, as Sonya stated, he knows a lot about Quan Chi due to being forced to serve him.

There's a few other things like this that I can nit and pick at, but besides the painfully predictable ending, there were no huge problems for me in the story. I do still like MK9's more though, but that's because I loved how it was a retelling of MK1-3.

Re: Anyone else disappointed with the story?

With Kotal Kahn as a third side, I wanted him to be used a lot more. He could have created many more plot twists and turns by complicating things for SF and the Brotherhood alike. It was too much a straight forward story.

No explanation about Noob. Gonna have to wait at least 4 years for that explanation if we ever get it. Major character deaths with no flashback to show it (Sektor, maybe Cyrax) and where was the surprise returning villain? Did they mean Dark Raiden? Oh and the anti climatic, surprise and vague Dark Raiden transformation.

More plot twists could have been had by Mileena holding out a bit longer.

7/10 for story. Not enough explained, some very vague parts but good overall.

I need another Konquest mode similar to Deceptions. The whole concept of an open world Mortal kombat was fantastic. Exploring all the realms made it so much more lengthy and you didn't just complete it in one sitting. Also having to be at a certain place at a certain time to unlock things made it more enjoyable.

Also disliked that Kotal Kahn betrayal to the Special Forces could be seen from a mile away as well. Especially when instances of betrayal are spewed all over the place left and right like Rain secretly planning to betray Mileena, and Kano betraying Kotal at the beginning of his chapter.

The story itself wasn't as good as MK9. But the Story Mode as a whole far surpassed the last game. It was much more cinematic and engaging. The voice acting was far superior. Together they're the two best single player campaigns in any fighter, ever. I have no problem with Cassie saving the realms. I like her more than I ever liked her parents.

Most of my issues come from the fact that half the playable roster is nothing more than netherealm zombies for the entirety of the story mode, and therefore I feel most of them shouldn't have been playable. Roster spaces that could've been filled by people that are still actually alive (there's several that make appearances in the story). Some characters were redundant as well. What's the point of having the offspring inherit their parents powers if you're going to put the parents in the game anyway? Jax or Jacqui could've been left off the roster. Cassie kills two birds with one stone. I understand having either Johnny or Sonya, but both of them being playable is a waste.

I liked MK9's story much better. Maybe because it was a condensed version of better source material with some twists.

I feel that there was a great story setup in place after MK9 that was kind of ruined in MKX. Just some of the factors include:

1.)Having everyone come back as a zombie, cheapening the effect of what the previous story left off at.
2.)The inclusion of these new special forces kids who were not around during the MK4-Armageddon timeline and could have been swapped out for characters with more significance/history.
3.)Major plot points not given enough time such as Kotal Khan's rise in outworld. What happened to Reiko and what were these peace accords that were made? How did any of that happen with this new MK4 > timeline?

There are a number of other issues but I don't want to create a giant page.

It's far from perfect but it's really well written.

Pros:

- Team Cassie and their dialogue.
- Cameos from various characters.
- Characters' intentions made sense.
- Really cool flashbacks.
- Cage Family.
- Fun QTE.
- AMAZING cutscenes.

Cons:

- Punchbag characters.
- Very very short.
- Obvious threat/boss.
- Missing characters.

Overall I give it 8/10

Shinnok being beaten in first chapter and sitting in medalion until the last chapter was a disappointment for me. Remember Frostmorn in Warcraft 3? How it had a voice in it that made Arthas crazy and evil? Why they couldn't use the same thing here? This could be used as explanation for Raiden becoming mercyless.

Kotal became Kahn in 1 single cutscene, no war for the throne, no fights, no explanation how he transformed from a ugly looking human into this cool looking guy, no Reiko's pakt cameabouts explanaition, nothing.

Rain simply admiting that he decided to set up Mileena, not even trying to lie, with Mileena being like in 3 meters from him...etc

NRS tryed to incorporate Outworld Civil War, Shinnok's revenge and Teenage Special Forces stories, and all possible cameos all in 3 hours time slot and as a result not a single story got enough time to be told like it should be, i rather they have Outworld Civil War expanded and save Shinnok for another game.

I can finally join the club of "I beat the story mode". Could anyone explain how Raiden became Dark Raiden? I actually even replayed the last fight just to see if I missed something. Nope... so ahmmm. What happened?

Nobody knows. There were another moments in Story Mode where you just assume some things happens somewhere, sometime else, a couple more cutscenes could really help. Perhaps NRS decided that everyone read the komic

I believe he entered the corrupted jinsei.

I thought it was pretty awesome compared to MK9, I'm happy that there wasn't a "Tragedy" where all the characters died by Sindel or another character.

Kotal Kahn didn't betray them out of malice, he did it for the protection of Outworld. Because of Earthrealm's incompetence, Shinnok was freed and Outworld was put into danger. Kotal Kahn considers the Netherrealm a serious threat, its the whole reason he overthrew Mileena in the first place. Alot of people think he's a villain, but he's actually a hero to Outworld.

Well, Mileena died. I'd consider that a tragedy. I truly felt sorry for Mileena, she just didn't want to call Earthrealm for aid, because they killed her "father", and because of that EVERYONE turns against her! I really wanted to see her succeed as a Kahnum of Outworld. I'm on her side, especially after Kotal turns out to be a backstabbing bastard as well, turning against Cassie's team like that.

Kotal was cool at first, he seemed alot more honourable and logical, but then he turned out to be a snake like the rest. I hope Subbie and his Lin Kuei took good care of him.

That's what I thought at first, but after his speeches about joining forces together to make a stronger whole to Tanya in his chapter, he turns his back on Earthrealm when they could join forces to take down Shinnok together. He might only care for Outworld, but he went against his own principles by doing so.

I was underwhelmed with the story mode, but it was far better than MK9 in my opinion as it didn't just rehash previous storylines and didn't feature so many plotholes and inconsistencies.

I don't think either Mileena or Kotal were villains. Mileena believed she had a legitimate claim to the throne. Kotal was a usurper, but believed that what he was doing was in the best interest of Outworld. They may not have been on our side. But I don't think of them as outright villains or completely evil. They're doing what's right by them.

As far as character deaths, there should've been more. Especially the netherrealm zombies. Either kill them off or turn them back to themselves. Quite pointless.

i think it had something to do with absorbing shinnok's power reverting him back to normal and purifying the jinsei which supposedly nearly killed him

overall for what it's worth it was good i have a bunch of nitpicks and surprised by the low body count (even more surprised a single good guy didn't die) but none of it detracted from the experience i do wish it was longer though
