Dead Rising
A thread for one of the best zombie games ever to hit store shelves. Dead Rising 1 was one of the first games to show off the capabilities of the Xbox 360 due to the extreme amount of zombies on screen at one time and still lacking any lag.
Dead Rising is an action-adventure, survivor horror video game, developed by Capcom and produced by Keiji Inafune. It was released on August 8, 2006 exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game console. The game was a commercial success. It has been introduced into the Xbox 360 "Platinum Hits" lineup, and a cell phone spin-off has been released. A sequel, Dead Rising 2, was developed by Blue Castle Games alongside many of the previous developers of Dead Rising, and was released in September 2010.
Dead Rising's story centers on Frank West, a photojournalist who ends up trapped in a shopping mall in the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado, that is infested with zombies. Frank must defend himself from zombie attacks, rescue survivors, contend with crazed psychopaths, and stay alive while still attempting to uncover the truth behind the incident. The player controls Frank as he explores the mall, using any available object as a weapon. The player can complete several main and optional missions to earn Prestige Points (PP) and gain special abilities. The game is designed as a sandbox game and features several endings, depending on the decisions the player makes along the way. A Wii remake was released in February 2009 titled Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, and a mobile phone version is also available. A sequel, Dead Rising 2 was published in September 2010.
Gameplay:
The player character is Frank West, a photojournalist who sneaks into the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado, which has been quarantined by the military. The main objective of the game is to investigate the Willamette Parkview Mall and complete "Case Files", missions that advance the storyline and reveal the cause of the zombie outbreak. The player has three days to do this, at which point a helicopter will arrive to retrieve him. Time passes twelve times faster in-game (i.e. one day in-game is two hours in real time); therefore, the game automatically concludes after six hours of gameplay. If a player fails a mission, it does not end the game, but different actions result in different endings at the end of the 72-hour period. In addition to the Case Files, the player is offered the opportunity to rescue other survivors of the zombie outbreak, either from the zombies themselves, or from "psychopaths", boss characters who have either been driven insane by the zombie attacks, or are using the outbreak as cover for their own purposes. Alternately, the player can ignore all missions and play as a sandbox game; wandering though the mall (modelled on stereotypical American shopping malls, trying outfits and food, and killing zombies with a variety of objects.
A counter at the bottom right corner of the screen helps the player keep track of how many zombies have been killed. Electronic Gaming Monthly reported that there can be up to 800 zombies on screen at once. During the day, the zombies are sluggish and weak, but at night they become more active, tougher, and more numerous.
Dead Rising 2
Gameplay:
The player controls protagonist Chuck Greene as he fights off hordes of zombies while accomplishing specific missions. The game includes several new objects that can be used to attack the zombies. Up to 7,000 zombies can be seen onscreen at the same time.
Dead Rising 2 allows players to manufacture their own custom weapons at various points in the game by collecting items and combining them together in maintenance rooms scattered across the game map. The player also has the ability to unlock "combo cards" that reveal weapons that can be combined together. Such combinations include the "Hail Mary," a hand grenade duct taped to a football, "Dynameat," a stick of dynamite duct taped to a piece of meat, the "Paddlesaw," two chainsaws duct taped to a kayak paddle, and "Spiked Bat" which is a baseball bat with nails hammered through the item.
Like the first game, boss fights are represented by 'psychopaths', people who have either been driven insane by the zombie outbreak or are taking advantage of it to fulfill their cruel desires.
My words:
I deeply enjoy both games. My favorite things about the series are that:
-The bosses are not zombies or zombie type creatures. They are psychopaths, people driven mad by the zombie outbreak from cannibal chefs or a group of people hunting other humans.
-The whole 72 hours to get everything done makes the game more strategic. You need to plan in advance things like "Should I save this group of survivors before going to the next mission?" or "Should I get this special sword from this store or head to the grocery store for some food?"
-The amount of zombies on screen is crazy. When you go down certain areas there can literally be like a river of zombies
-The combo weapon system in Dead Rising 2 made things really fun especially if you didn't know what went with what. You'd get a football and take a while to figure out that you can tape a grenade to it and throw it at a group of zombies.
-The story in both games was pretty good. Frank needed to expose the conspiracy while Chuck needed to keep his infected daughter from zombification by giving her daily doses of Zombrex.
Miscellaneous thoughts:
-The coop in Dead Rising 2 works really well. Some might think that it's lame that you have to stay in the same area but there is so much fun to be had there. What other game allows you to go mechanical bull riding in the middle of a zombie outbreak for extra XP?
-I think Dead Rising 1 was much harder than its sequel. The combo weapon system is cool but some combo weapons really make the bosses much easier. Also night time in Dead Rising 1 obstructed your vision, making your ability to plan ahead much harder because you could end up walking into a crowd of zombies.
-I prefer Frank West over Chuck Greene. I think he is a much bigger hero since his objective was not getting out of the zombie infested mall but it was to unveil the outbreak. He chose to go out into the mall in order to find out who started it.
Accomplishments:
-I have the Zombie Genocider acheivement from DR1. The real megabuster made it worth it.
-I have every achievement in Dead Rising 2 except the zombie kills since I've been too lazy.
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
I am very excited for this game since I never played Case West so I can't wait to play as Frank again.
The plot is basically a what-if scenario. What if Frank West was in Dead Rising 2 and not Chuck Greene? So it is the same environment as Dead Rising 2 but more areas, weapons, and a new story.
It is priced at $40 since it is the same game but it's not.
EDIT:
Alright I got and beat DR2: OTR so here are my thoughts.
It was well worth the $40. You THINK it's going to be the same exact thing as Dr2 until a HUGE twist occurs, turning the story in a completely different direction. Of course, I won't spoil it.
Uranus Zone is OKAY. It's a lot more just good looks than fun. I'd rather be in one of the Casinos cause it's filled with stupid stores and useless amusement park games. I expected a lot more.
There are new psychopaths and survivors! Woo hoo! I loved them all, especially the survivor Deidre. If you know who she is, it's obvious why.
Coop is not two Franks, it's Frank and Chuck AND they gave them things to say to each other which is really well done. So for example, if Frank takes a crappy picture [yes the camera system is back too] Chuck might say "And you call yourself a photojournalist?" Or if Chuck wants to leave to another area and spams the command says "Come on let's move." Frank can respond saying "Will you SHUT UP?!" Some of their lines are pretty hilarious so the relationship between them is awesome.
Frank will also have comments on psychopaths, survivors, etc. For example in the beginning when you meet Anim he is like "Is Anim even a real name?"
There are a few new weapons and combo weapons. The electro-smasher being my favorite [sledgehammer + car battery].
The story is different but similar. You're not getting Zombrex for Katey of course. Frank is trying to uncover everything and wasn't framed. His popularity and success went downhill so he's trying to redeem himself.
And on my last note, I like how Dr2: OTR ended more than how Dr2 ended. It was a lot more interesting and really had you surprised.
