You definitely want to do it quicker rather than slower. Try it a bit inside sweep distance, too (you can actually be pretty close when you do it). Also, if you're playing on an Xbox, use the right bumper for block instead of the right trigger; the way the trigger works can screw up the timing on a move that uses block.
