New Captain Marvel Render from MK vs DC Universe
Midway has released a new high-resolution render of Captain Marvel from the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. The WorldsCollide.com website lists the character as Shazam, which is appears to be incorrect. The character Shazam is a wizard and DC Comics appears to market Captain Marvel under the "Shazam" label. Granted the confusion is high, but this entry in Wikipedia explains the name "Shazam".
Because Marvel Comics trademarked their Captain Marvel comic book during the interim between the original Captain Marvel's Fawcett years and DC years, DC Comics is unable to promote and market their Captain Marvel/Marvel Family properties under that name. Since 1972, DC has instead used the trademark Shazam! as the title of their comic books and thus the name under which they market and promote the character. Consequently, Captain Marvel himself is sometimes erroneously referred to as Shazam.

The Mystery Of "Tobias?"
Today Ed Boon updated his website Noob.com with a new teaser. This time it's asks us a simple question:
Tobias?
What does this mean? It could mean anything, and I'm sure we'll find soon enough. We could find out with the next MKast podcast. Or maybe it wont be revealed until the San Diego Comic-Con events tomorrow. There are lots of talk and rumors on the internet about it, so we figured we'd share our theories on the matter.

First, Ed could be hinting towards the return of John Tobias to Midway. No one knows what John has been up to in the past few years. John along with other Midway employees left in the late 90s to start up his own game studio, Studio Gigante. They put out two games, Tao Feng Fist of the Lotus for Microsoft and WWE WrestleMania 21 for THQ, before it closed it's doors in 2005.

After that, John has been said to be doing freelance work while his former Studio Gigante partners went to EA Chicago. But sadly, EA Chicago also closed its doors late last year. As earlier this year it was reported that some of them have now gotten together after EA Chicago has closed and started another company, RoboModo. On their MobyGames profile, John is not listed as one of their founders. So from what we can see, he has no other public obligations. While this doesn't rule him out of coming back, it also doesn't prove he is back. I know a lot of fans would love to see his influence and input return to the series.

Or, Ed could simply be alluding to Noob Saibot as a character for the the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. This is very possible, but in recent years they've occasionally dropped always using the "Saibot" part of his name. Perhaps they are just trying to judge the fan's reactions to rumors of characters to see if they should include one or not, an internet sounding board if you will.

Maybe even it could even be both of the above. Time will tell. Until then, stay tuned for any arrested developments as we'll bring them to you right away. We have our ears to the ground and will let you know if anything else develops.

Mortal Kombat 9 To Be More Mature
Kotaku sat down with Ed Boon yesterday at Comic Con and got a great bit of information with regards to the next Mortal Kombat game. They are reporting that Ed said that Mortal Kombat 9 is already in the early planning stages and is looking like it'll be a return to the dark and violent roots we're all used to with Mortal Kombat.

While that grittier, darker version of MK didn't make it far beyond the technology development stages — Boon told us there was little in the way of concept art for the grimier spin on the series — the next next Mortal Kombat may strive for more blood, more violence, more of everything that warrants an M-rating.

It sure sounds like the plan is to revert to the earlier "Gears of War" influenced style that was scrapped when the DC deal finalized.

While it is still very early to be talking about the next game, we hope to hear more solid information about this in 2009.
