Johnny Cage stood on the dock and watched the old boat sailing away.

“Late again. Maybe five bags was one too many” he said, as he reached for his wallet. The sweating Chinese porter looked like he agreed. As Cage counted out a few dollars into the porter’s hand, the sudden shriek of tortured tyres made them both turn and look towards the main dock street. “Now that sounds interesting” Cage remarked, as the porter grabbed his wages and ran.

Sonya Blade shadowed Liu Kang, watching as he entered the nightclub. Hsu Hao had told her that the name and theme of the place was ‘CyberPunk’ - the perfect location for a man with half a metal face to hide out. As she approached the entrance, she paused outside to snap a metal circlet around her head, clip metal bracers on her arms, and check the pistol was secured in the small of her back. Taking several slow deep breaths, she entered the club.

About half the tables were empty, but the rest were occupied by young Orientals dressed in metal and leather, spikes and studs. Standing on one table was a youth showing off his outfit, which made him look like some sort of robotic ninja from the future. Sonya ignored him and glanced around, spotting Liu Kang stealthily moving up a set of stairs. Sonya waited until the bartender was distracted by customers, then did the same.

At the top of the stairs was a bend, and long corridor. At the end of the corridor was a doorway, and Liu Kang was going through. Sonya slowly walked down the corridor, but was caught in the open when two Oriental men dressed in black came out of the door. The thugs watched her approach warily, putting their hands on the short swords they wore.

“What do you want?” said one of the guards.
“I’m an old army buddy of Kano” Sonya replied.
“Is that what he wants now?” said the second guard, grinning. “Go on in then, Captain Hooker!”

Sonya opened the door to see Kano sitting behind a computer desk, his metal eye glowing red. Liu Kang stood off to one side, looking anxious. “Ello darlin” Kano drawled, “Come an meet the saviour of the world ... me!”

.....

“This tournament will decide the fate of the Earth.”

Liu Kang repeated the stories of Mortal Kombat, passed down through generations of Shaolin monks. This was his mission, to bring fighters to the tournament - but he could see that neither Kano nor Sonya believed or cared. They were staring at each other intently the whole time he was talking. In fact Sonya looked bored, her arms stretching behind her spine to bend the stiffness out of it ...

Liu Kang leapt across the room with incredible speed, his foot connecting with the pistol in Sonya’s hand just as she aimed it at Kano. As her weapon spun away, Sonya turned to face Liu Kang as Kano laughed “Feisty, girl!” Suddenly the door crashed open to reveal the door guards with their swords drawn. “More fun!” Kano laughed even harder.

Sonya immediately attacked the first thug, dropping to the floor and sweeping his feet away, then chopping at the downed man’s exposed neck, making him gag. Liu Kang waited until the other guard thrust with his sword, then twisted his body to avoid the blade. He stepped inside the range of the weapon, and three swift punches laid the man out cold. Liu Kang turned to watch as Sonya bounced the head of her opponent on the floor, putting him out of the fight. The monk raised his hands peacefully and said to the American woman “Kano is gone”.

Under Kano’s desk was a trapdoor leading down to the cloakroom. Liu Kang dropped down the hole, while Sonya retrieved her pistol then followed. The door was closed, but a window gaped open leading onto a busy street. As Liu Kang then Sonya climbed through, a motorcycle engine roared, and from a parking bay they watched Kano speed off down the road. Sonya ran to the parking bay and pushed a staring man off his bike. “Official business, chum” she said, mounting the vehicle. “Me too” said Liu Kang, jumping aboard behind her. Sonya growled, but accelerated the machine in pursuit.

.....

Kano gunned his bike forward. He had no doubt he could lose his pursuers, this was his turf. Turning onto the main dock street, he laughed as people dived out of his way, shouting and screaming.

.....

In a small alley ahead, a beggar wearing ragged clothes and a battered straw hat glanced up as he heard Kano approach. Pointing his finger, a small bolt of lightning flashed from the beggar’s hand and exploded under Kano’s front wheel, causing him to swerve. Sparks shone briefly in the beggar's eyes, and he grinned.

.....

Kano’s stomach churned as his bike veered, and he struggled to regain control. He swore as he straightened his machine, but found himself speeding down a dead-end jetty - heading towards the sea to drown, but only if he didn’t crash into some old barrels first.

.....

Sonya pulled up at the jetty entrance with the sudden shriek of tortured tyres. Elbowing behind her, she heard Liu Kang grunt. Then she grabbed her pistol and prayed and fired, but once again Liu Kang desperately knocked her aim wide, gasping “The tournament!”

Sonya’s shots smashed into the old fuel barrels stored at the end of the jetty, liquid spraying everywhere as Kano and his bike sped through. The fluid ignited, and Kano leapt to the handlebars and kicked off as a mighty explosion erupted. The Black Dragon fighter curled into a ball as momentum and the shock wave propelled him, tumbling over and over, far out to sea.

Johnny Cage stood on the dock and watched the old boat rescue Kano.

“I knew that would be interesting” he said.
