RDR is a great game alright, and I'm not even a fan of open world games. I think I appreciated it quite a bit as a western fan since it captured that atmosphere so well, and Marston is a very likable protagonist.
A personal 9/10, and definitely one of the best this generation.
A little late, but woah man, you missed on some great systems. 1998 in particular was a year full of gems (Fallout 2, RE2, Tekken 3, MGS, Zelda OOT, Rival Schools among others).
Since you got a DC, you owe it to yourself to play Shenmue and its sequel (PAL version or you can also get it on Xbox.. it's playable on the 360 too). It's the sole reason I had a DC. You can also find a few enhanced PS1 ports from Capcom such as RE2, 3, and Dino Crisis. The system still has the best version of RE CODE: Veronica too.
I was an early adopter and got it at the Japanese launch in 98, which proved to be a really big mistake. It got much better upon the western launches and the system ended up a cult favorite if you will; some truly original first party content. Alas, Sega made some critical mistakes from the get go with the JPN launch and during 2000. The rampant piracy didn't help much considering that they were bleeding money already
Anyway, I'm replaying Dino Crisis on the PS1. And after some thought, especially while going through my library, I've made a decision to halt my gaming hobby. I haven't been enjoying games as much in recent years, and it's progressively gotten worse. I've enjoyed the occasional old school game replay much more than any new release (and I didn't even purchase many this gen). If I'm not genuinely enjoying new games, it's time to call it quits after some 25 years.
MK next spring will be the swan song. I owe the series that much since I've had great times with it in the 90's, up to and including MK4.
