Roster Speculation

If there's only 24 characters (excluding Goro), I see this as the rest of the roster:

6 more returning: Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Jax, Mileena, Kenshi
4 more new: Takeda, Jacqui, Kung Jin, Salazar/Erron Black
1 3D: Fujin, Shinnok (unplayable)

If there's 26-28 characters, I'd throw in a random combination of Shang Tsung, Smoke, and more new characters.

That's me, though. I don't think Baraka or most of the MK3 cast has a chance. I don't think any 3D characters have a chance, outside of Fujin, Shinnok, Bo' Rai Cho and Kenshi. And I don't think we're getting more than 8-10 new characters.

I'm not even gonna try to predict DLC without knowing the entire launch roster, but I think Cyrax is a shoe-in.

Few problems with this, the main roster is 24 characters, highlighted by the fact they just added a 25th slot for Goro and DLC. Injustice started with 24 characters and got 6 as DLC to make 30, Boon was video'd saying around 30, so that's how it'll pan out I bet.

We also know this game will have the most amount of new characters. Whether that means the day the game drops or through DLC is yet to be seen, but it needs to be at least 13 more new characters which is another 9.

How was there an issue with it, as far as slots go?
The character slots can scroll up, down, left or right.
The character slots can also be shrunken a little bit to accommodate 28 main roster slots
Boon said in an interview that the roster would be close to the size of MK9, and Shaun Himmerick said that they were going to fit in as many characters as possible on the main roster.
MK9 had 28 people on the main roster + 4 DLC, which = 32 total.

This also doesn't fix anything, as you are forgetting the "Guest character."

I'm still sticking with my original theory:

1. Sub-Zero
2. Scorpion
3. Raiden
4. Kano
5. Kitana
6. Kung Lao
7. Reptile
8. Ermac
9. Quan Chi
10. Ferra / Torr
11. D'vorah
12. Kotal Kahn
13. Cassie Cage
14. MK9
15. MK9
16. MK9
17. MK9
18. MK9
19. MK9
20. MK9
21. NEW
22. NEW
23. NEW
24. NEW
25. MK4 thru MKD debut character
26. MK4 thru MKD debut character
27. MK4 thru MKD debut character
28. MK4 thru MKD debut character

DLC
29. Goro
30. MK9
31. MK9
32. Guest

If they do more than 4 DLC:
33. MK9
34. MK4 thru MKD debut character

NOTE:
This is NOT what I want for MKX, just what I speculate could happen.
This is NOT my wishlist.

Fixed for my opinion.

I agree with you, I don't see it being more then 24. Ed said 30, but I don't remember him elaborating on it. I think it will be 30 with DLC. This may be the final selection screen, if they had more blocks it would have been shown in some way by now. The game is less then 3 months out if it stays on time.

Baraka doesn't have a chance, but Jax is worth betting on? How do you figure that? Baraka is directly (if tangentially) connected to one of the primary conflicts of MKX, while Jax already has a potential replacement lined up in Jacqui. If anything, I'd say it's the other way around.

They said nothing was final. They added extra space since last time; there's no reason they can't do it again. Just presenting facts.

Jax doesn't have a lot of fans, but neither does Kano. NRS love them both, though. I'm sure they'll find a story role for him like they apparently have with Kano.

I believe you're misunderstanding the relationship between this game and the whole descendants concept. They're not simply replacing the old with the new in this game (although that may be the case in MK11). MKX seems like the game where the torch is passed, so they're including both the old and new generations. They want both generations to interact at the only time they can, because having the new replace the old in their debut will hurt their chances in the long run. Fans seeing the new interact with the old before they become a big part of the lore will help fans appreciate and welcome these new characters.

Jax has been brought back to life (as seen in the comic) and he's training his daughter/niece. He's still able enough to fight alongside Johnny and Sonya, so I'm sure he's not gonna lay back and watch things happen; he's gonna get involved in the conflicts of this game.

Besides all that, here are some big hints for him:
- Boon's boot pic: boot 5 looks an awful lot like something only Jax would wear. I don't see his daughter being so bulky.
- Boon tweeting a picture of two Jack Nicholsons (two Jacks = Jax). He could also be implying we're seeing two Jacks in this game: Jackson and Jacqui.
- Jax has been in every main MK game since his debut, except Deception (but he was in Unchained). NRS loves him and thinks he's an essential part of MK, apparently. Jax is in the top 10 most popular MK9 online characters. I believe NRS sees Jax as an essential if this game is the swan song for the old generation.
- Boon said families will do fatalities on each other: I'm sure it's more than just the Cage family. I expect Briggs family and Kenshi/Takeda to murder each other alongside them.

I don't care if Jax is in the game or not. I have no personal stock here. I'm just saying I would bet money on his inclusion based on all of this.

Baraka is cool, but he's just a jobber. That role can be filled by anyone. Many characters are involved in the Outworld conflict, but they don't need to make them all playable. Hell, I think Reiko might have a better chance than Baraka. Baraka just isn't that popular in light of MK9 either. I can see him being DLC though, if he misses the game.

I'm saying the screen from yesterday may be close to what final will be or is the final. If they were going to add more blocks why show a new screen with the DLC box (guess BOX) just to change everything again. I know you have testing and adding blocks isn't the hardest thing to do. In my mind I just think the basics are close to done, they will be focusing harder on characters, story, glitches, etc.

ill be fine with 8-10 new fighters that fine with me as long they good play well and has a decent backstory

Maybe because it an early build of the game.
You do know that game demos are usually 6 months old or older, right?

I thought the passing of the torch was supposed to be more metaphorical than actually dramatized live in the story, but I guess with Johnny Cage being all but confirmed, and Sonya heavily hinted at, you've probably got the right of it re: Jax.

I still think "Baraka has no chance" is a huge overstatement. Mileena is almost guaranteed, and she'll need jobbers to plot with and bodyguard her. Either Baraka or Reiko (or both) could fulfill this role. I know lots of people, myself included, want Reiko in, and I know he was seen in the comic, but I still wouldn't put his odds above Baraka's, who's been a mainstay since MK2. Between the recent focus on MK2 characters (Reptile, Kitana, Kung Lao) and the sweeping redesigns of Kitana, Kano, and possibly Reptile, I think a redesigned Baraka is the most likely outcome. It would feel strange to have no true Tarkatans in a game that deals so heavily with Outworld. And introducing a new Tarkatan when Baraka is ripe for doing something with... feels odd, too.

I'm obviously far from certain about Baraka. It just feels right.

and besides they could have the final version of the select screen done by now and we dont know how old the select screen with ermac on it

I know demos are older then current game status. All I was saying was I don't think the selection screen we have seen will be much different in the final, it could be the final or close to it. I could be wrong to, this is just my opinion.

You might be right about Baraka. I just think his eternal jobber status combined with his loss of popularity after MK9 (he was ranked 29/32 in online usage and was low-tier, plus poor story presence) has probably put him on NRS' shit list. Unfortunately, because he was my favorite character back during Deception. I would love to see him as DLC if he doesn't make the cut.

Mileena definitely needs jobbers, unless she's killed in the comic (dear god, no...). Baraka and Reiko would definitely be hers. It seems like Reptile, D'Vorah and Ferra/Torr belong to Kotal. Who else can Mileena have?

Also, re-read the post you've replied to. I've added a bit that might clarify things a bit more. I believe this entire game is symbolic of the passing of the torch, which is great decision if NRS want to take MK into a new generation. Doing a Street Fighter III would have been a bad idea, but mixing the old and new before retiring the old and thrusting the new into the spotlight is genius.

I think our final roster size will be 28. I think we should get five more returning characters since we could get 14 old and 14 new.

The last 5 returning characters I hope for are:

1. Bo Rai Cho
2. Fujin
3. Reiko
4. Johnny Cage
5. Kenshi

thank for saying that so much this game is about passing of the tourch

This is exactly why I want the game to be 50/50, but unfortunately I see less than 35% being new on this roster, which is weak (IMO) for a game that's supposed to be about passing the torch.
Jaqui, Takeda, Erron Black and Kung Jin would be great and bring the new character number to 8, but 3 or 4 more would be better.
12 new characters on this roster, would be ideal, IMO.

I would love for you to be right, I just don't think it's gonna happen. Injustice starting at 24 and getting 6 DLC, and so far seeing MKX select screen at 24 (with a bonus DLC/Goro slot) thinks 24 is what we'll get. If it is more than 24, no way will they have scrolling ... they didn't even have that in Armageddon! They'll just squeeze it in, and it is possible as I tried it in photoshop, no need for shrinking.

As for boon talking about being size of MK9, that'd be good but could easily mean DLC. MK9 got 4 DLC, Injustice got 6, so they could easily do more DLC here than MK9 to match the same figure. Any links on the Shaun Himmerick quote? I believe you just curious to see it. MK9 had 27 on main roster, CyberSub took up 2 slots.

Didn't they say they didn't want guest characters this time around?

You also didn't refute the fact they've said on record that this will have the most amount of new characters any MK game has had, that's at least 13, you only have 8.

MK1 - 10
MK2 - 10
MK3 - 8
UKM3 - 3
MKT - 1
MK4 - 8
MKDA - 12
MKD - 9
MKA - 2
MK09 - 1

I understand that. You wanna see more new because you're excited for it, but some people are scared of letting go, so NRS is making this a gradual process. They're gonna introduce a decent-sized batch of new guys (about 1/3 of the roster) to make it feel somewhat new, but not enough to overwhelm anybody stuck in the trilogy era. Basically, I think they're trying to find the middle ground that pleases as much of the fanbase as possible. I think in the next game, we might see the tables flip: 2/3 of the roster being a part of the new generation, 1/3 being old favorites that can still fight (Johnny/Sonya/Jax gonna be too old, but they've been replaced; characters like Kitana and Baraka can stay in the next generation because they don't age the same way). MK11 is gonna be the more exciting game for you if NRS is going in the direction I think they're going in.
