From IGN

Square Enix has revealed new info about Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. In an interview with 4Gamer, director Motomu Toriyama, producer Yoshinori Kitase, lead designer Yujii Abe and art director Isamu Kamikokuryou explained more about the game’s mechanics, plus why it isn’t called Final Fantasy XIII-3.

According to a translation by Final Fantasy Network, the team believes the entry is unique enough to warrant a different name, “as calling it XIII-3 might give the impression that it would be a direct evolution of Final Fantasy XIII-2.” Kitase referred to the game as “a new experience.”

Toriyama noted that Lightning Returns will be “world-driven,” as opposed to the “story-driven” Final Fantasy XIII and “player-driven” XIII-2. The idea of a “world-driven” game is “to put the player in a world that is constantly shifting and changing — one that doesn’t necessarily revolve around the player.” The world will reportedly run in real time 24 hours a day, giving the player “a sense of time and urgency to experience content that will not always be waiting for them.”

Players will manage the game via Lightning, who will slow down or speed up the world based on her actions. According to Abe, the day and night cycle of the game has not been completed but will be “roughly one to two hours.” Toriyama noted that experiencing everything in Lightning Returns will likely require multiple playthroughs, as with Abe saying that he wants players to think “oh! I didn’t know that event occurred” while on their second time through.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was originally announced in August. The 4gamer interview reflects comments from Square Enix earlier this year that Lightning Returns encourages multiple playthroughs. Back in September, Toriyama confirmed to IGN that Lightning Returns will be the last Final Fantasy XIII and that some familiar faces will return.

I know there are only a few FF fans here, but I am hyped.

From what people are saying this game is gonna be similar to majora's mask in a sense that you have a time limit to do stuff in a completely open world. And then time resets. and with each reset, you can change things about the world. Making replays supposevly very good.

A solo adventure, where you don't have a party.

Some crazy random direction with their development. Hope it turns out good.

I'm not as hyped as much as I am ready to for Square to move on to Versus13. But this does look like it'll be a fitting end for Lightning and her story.

It's not the story that's intriguing to me.

Although that is a factor.

It's the open world, solo experience.

It's gonna have a block button/attack buttons. She'll be able to climb onto ledges and stuff.

You'll have 12 hour time limit or something like that. then when the world ends. You'll find some way to restart, and some changes you made will remain.

and you need to go about the open world in another way to explore more.

It just seems like something out of Square's element. I'm interested.

That does sound intriguing. I'm not counting this game out I'm just not really excited, I want my turn based Jrpg again. I just hope they aren't going to make this a H&S game.

I'm sure it's gonna still have the final fantasy feel.

It's not gonna feel like God of War/Bayonetta.

I did love games by Square in the past, but my interest has started to wane with time. FFXIII in particular was painfully linear, even for an FF game, it wasn't until you reach the Gran Pulse was there any opportunity to explore.

An open, changing world is sounds interesting though. I wonder how combat and character growth will work.

Yeah not to much confirmation on things.

but what people do know is it will be like one of the first FF games with a block button, and your face buttons will represent different attacks.

So only time will tell.

I also read/hear Lighting will be HIGHLY customizable, as in you can completely dress her and the way she dresses will determine what skills she has, and how she can react to the environment.

so we'll see.

I Also when I heard the 3rd game was coming out was like "Wow they are really squeezing the juice out this apple aren't they?"

But when today I took the time to read about how the mechanics will work. I'm highly interested. here's to hoping I'm not over extending my expectations.

I'm really looking forward to this game. I actually like the XIII games and I love the Lightning character. Though I do miss the old FF feel.

I like lightning alot too. And I liked xiii and xiii-2.

I liked xiii's story enough to not care about linear
Aspects.
Linear has never been a deterrent for me. MGS4 is linear, RE is linear.

FF games have never been really difficult. So what mattered most to me was story, but this time with this new game, the gameplay has me more intrigued

XIII being linear never bothered me either, and I liked the story even though it took hours for everything to really kick in. XIII-2 gave me a little trouble because sometimes I didn't know what to do. Also that first battle with Caius really frustrated the hell out of me.

Perhaps "linear" is a poor choice of words on my part. Linear structures aren't inherently bad, it's a matter of how the game handles it. Quite frankly, the older FF games are linear too but they were designed in a way to give the player an illusion of having more freedom and allowed more things to do in general. If FXIII had more locations like the Gran Pulse instead of predominantly straight paths, that alone would make me like the game a lot more.

I hope you guys know what you're saying by complaining about linearity. I've known many a person that complains about linearity, who, upon playing one of the few truly significant non-linear parts of a mainline FF game (the second half of FFVI), find themselves slobberingly lost and end up complaining about how the story dies.

Did that saga really need another chapter? Give me FF XIII Versus or Square Enix can go F themselves. SE = The Capcom of RPGs.

Versus XIII looked like the best thing to come out of square enix in the last decade and sadly its been in development hell and the other games in the Fabula Nova Cyrisalis whatever series were made and XIII has two originally unplanned sequels wtf.

On topic this game didn't wow me the setting seemed too stylized in a way I don't like ill hold judgment on the gameplay until I see it in action as of right now I'm unsure how I feel about it. FF XIII initially had me stoked when they showed a trailer claiming it was all made from gameplay with lightning doing a back flip thru a train shooting people and stuff that was totally bogus. FF XIII-2 piqued my interests when they showed the new villian guy (whatever his name is) and I heard it had a monster recruiting system but the dlc announced for it had me on the fence (Ezio and mass effect costumes huh?) but Gilgamesh almost mad me buy it no lie.

This game will make or break my thoughts on this "saga" if it looks good I'll get all 3 games and enjoy the big picture if it fails to grab me then I'll walk away from it as I already did with vanilla XIII after 4 hours.

Very interested actually. I think that a break away from the usual FF mold might do the franchise some good, and the openworld setting seems very exciting. Hopefully it doesn't end up too much like a zelda game though, because I'm noticing quite a few similarities to Majora's Mask at the moment.

They are working on FFXIII versus. They actually cancelled it, but then re-decided to go through with it.

and if you seen how gloomy and tragic the FFXIII-2 ended. Well it'd be a very dark ending for the game lol

this is certainly a break from ff tradition and i'm looking forward to it

not the biggest fan of lightning's new design though

Square Enix, what the fluff bros? Where is Just Cause 3? At the very least, can a tigga get a Legend of Dragoon sequel? I know you didn't make it, I know it daddy, I just want it. What is Meru doing?

I've never been a FF guy. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't kinda interested in the XIII saga.

There was a Legend of the Dragoon sequel planned and started for PS2 but it was scrapped when they added LotD to the PSN store they had one of the guys who worked on it (who is some marketing release manger or some shit now) talk about the development of that game.

But there will never be a sequel for it EVER!

On topic tho The look of this game so far is weird compared to XIII I sort of liked the futuristic setting as opposed to this M.C. Escher look with sun glasses and block button for what?

..to block out the lightning at night that is :_cool:
