No MK 10 for PS3/360

NetherRealm Studios must add significant new ideas to the next Mortal Kombat game, according to the series' longstanding creative director Ed Boon.

Boon told CVG that his Chicago studio has not yet begun work on the successor to the highly acclaimed 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, and suggested that work on the game is earmarked for next generation systems.

"Just philosophically, I don't think we could take the approach of doing the same thing but adding new characters in our next Mortal Kombat game," he said.

"We definitely want to do something new with it, we feel we have to introduce something into the mix."

But Boon believes that there is less opportunity to innovate if a sequel is published on the same console; An indication that the next Mortal Kombat game will arrive on hardware as yet revealed by Microsoft and Sony.

"If you introduce another edition of your game on the same console, you cannot provide a radically different experience," Boon said.

"I'm sure, if we were to do a new Mortal Kombat game on next generation systems, I think we would be able to provide dramatically different experiences."

NetherRealm, owned by media conglomerate Warner Bros., is currently finishing up production on Injustice: Gods Among Us, which is due for release in the first half of 2013.

Boon said that the biggest enemy to the next Mortal Kombat game is NetherRealm resting on its laurels.

"I'm a big fan of fighting games, but some of them I've seen are just a re-skin of the same game with much prettier graphics and new characters," he said.

"Effectively it just delivers the same experience, and over the course of time these games sell less and less and less and less. I think you need to offer something that hasn't been done before. Like with Injustice, no one has done what we're doing with the game's backgrounds, and I think that's a big part of why it will appeal to fans."

Not sure how I feel about this, I guess that I should be glad that they're not rushing out a new game too early. Better start saving money for a new console fellas.

Injustice better be damn good!

Well I guess that means we have at least a good 3 or 4 years to save up then considering they haven't started production yet. I mean I like that he's not rushing it but I wanted to continue the story.

Alright, I am so glad to hear what Ed Boon said here. Ed Boon is a genius, but if there are no ideas for a GOOD fighting game, then better take some time to make the next game. 4 or 5 years to make a good game sounds plausible to me. Thank you again C-word, very informative news as usual.

Im neutral on the aspect im bummed out that it's gonna be minute for the story to continue but in hindsight at least he does give a damn about his series by not rushing things and is willing to take the risk and expand the fighter genre to new heights

This shouldn't be a big surprise to people. :) If you do the math, the next MK was always going to be on the next-generation platforms.

Injustice isn't due out until some time in 2013. If there is any truth to the rumors, at least one of the next-gen consoles could be out by the end of 2013 (2014 at the very latest). The earliest we could see the next MK release is 2015. I'm actually kind of hoping WB gives NetherRealm a three year dev cycle (a 2016 release) since they'll be working on new hardware but that's just me. :)

I can't wait to see what kind of stuff they have planned for a next-gen MK!!

So glad about this, maybe we'll finally get some Deadly Alliance caliber kontent.
Though MK10 wont make me buy a new console. I'll be picking it up when Fallout 4 comes out.

i say mk10 in 2015 AT THE LATEST! and im talking january, not may. but i would have no problem if it was out in 2014. just dont rush it. plus part of nrs is probably secretly working on mk10 and just not telling us.

I half-expected this to happen, but still, glad to see that it actually will happen

MK10 on 8th gen consoles is definitely worth it for me

That's if they actually begin to work on it somewhat soon. If they don't split their studio up to work on different projects and end up working on a whole new I.P. first like they've been trying to do, we might not see mk10 for quite a few years.

I don't really get what "dramatically different experience" they could provide on a next-gen system unless they know things we don't. With that said, I also don't know what they could add/change to a next-gen console that would cause such a different experience that didn't also take away from the formula that makes MK such a great game for me. Sure, they can make better visuals (Unreal 4 Engine, anyone?), but I really don't see that as being a dramatic difference.

Hopefully there'll be more space for content.
I honestly wouldn't mind if they completely recycled MKDA & MKD's Krypt items (concept art, music and extras) and tossed them into MK10's Krypt.

Yeah I kinda feel the same way. Besides graphics, what is the next generation actually going to change? I mean its good that Boon is taking his time and plans on making it special but will it actually be anything that this generation of consoles can't do?

More space?

I remember talk about how more couldn't be put on the disc because it was jam packed.

All I can think of is maybe they're waiting to take advantage of the next gen consoles' new features (whatever they'll be) in a way that would help them bring innovation to MK10

If MK10 will be in the next generation consoles, I hope it'll be like in 2014 then. For sure my budget will have no doubts about it.

But if for PS3, I hope it gets released next year.
