Mortal Kombat HD Remix with MUGEN

Hey, first of let me just say that you guys are doing a wonderful job! I mean so far it's better than anyone could have hoped NRS could have pulled of, as far as I am concerned!. Anyway, im obviously here because I am a Mortal Kombat fan, along with my friend. We have been following this thread for the last couple of weeks, and we think its looking great.

We obviously want to help anyway we can, now first of all we need to make it clear that since we already are working on a big movie project along with other things, we are semi limited into how much time we can allow ourselves to sink into this project. But we WANT TO be part of this. So for now, we would like to know if we could work on something, you know easy. Hell when we take breaks in the editing room, a round of old MK is what works best for us! So it would be an honor to help you guys!

We looked through the older MK games, and one thing we think might be something we can have on our side pretty much all the time is something like the intro for MK2 (yes I know you work on MK1 for now, but why do something tomorrow that can do today eh?) What I mean by the intro is the thunder in the sky/logo intro. Most of you know what I am talking about, if not its here from around 0:45 and forward.

We would love to work on that, if it would be possible to have the intro in HD for MK2, and after that incorporate that with the story/character bios that come up before if the wish is to keep those aswell. IMO it would be cleaner to just have the intro, but I suppose thats going to be someone elses decision.

Anyway here is the intro I was talking about:

0:45 and onward

If you guys think it would be a good idea to have the intro for the game in HD, would you want it in regular avi video format or what works?

It's nice to see so many people wanting to help out with this.
@Hammerhans: It's fine with me if you work on it for the MKII HD project (which we won't do until after MK1 HD is done), but you should also make sure it's okay with all the other people that are part of this project. :)

my reaction when i first saw this

@Hammerhans: at this moment mugen doesn't support video playback but who knows, maybe when we work on MK II HD it does.
video or sprites it will help us, so thanx in advance ;)

Hey still working..

I had a bit of a delay when I noticed the wire frame was getting too crazy in some parts. I saw
there were going to be some problem areas for animation, but that's fixed and I'm texturing again.

Video has to be separated in to individual files for each frame .pcx. You can make your movie and convert it to .pcx with a file converter. MK1 doesn't haven an intro like that though, so it would be cool for MK2.

png is a better option IMO. remember that mugen 1.1 support 24 and 32 bits png images ;)
also we don't know yet if they (elecbyte) will add video support in future releases, so we will see if we are lucky and when the time of MK II HD arrives we can enjoy of this feature

Bleed about your work take your time to have it as good as posible. is better to wait a bit than rush it with a bad result :)

The two central vertical lines above the carpet need more smoothing, they looks very pixelated right now.
The gong is good.

Hi all,

Ok another update. Badmouse, I can't add ambient occlusion since all the elements are rendered first then combined in Photoshop, so I did the next best thing and add some inner shadow to objects that make them feel like they have more weight. I just finished the throne, and the gong detailing as well. Fixed the pixelated lines above the carpet and added contrast and a bit of darkness.

Can you fix it?

use gradient or something here to make it more smooth.

And shadow under the throne looks strange.

Awsome:) I also think, you must do something with light, as it looks flat. Make an effect that light comes from windows (the light spot is behind the window), this will work great!
I mean, something like this:

I can try. Remember its not 3D..its just PhotoShop 2D like the original game.

If it's just PS, how did you do the statues? It looks like they're actually turned compared to the original ones.

I understand well, what is 3D and how 2D works:) You create this arena in 3D and then gonna separately render each part (dragon, throne, etc) to create sprites from renders:) So, before rendering each detail, just place your light spot in a right place (behind) and you'll have this effect:) It will be a bit harder with the floor and shadows on it, you'll have to draw the shadows on a floor in right places. With your talent i have no doubts you'll find a way how to do it, but with this effect the whole scene will look more "alive" and realistic:) No?

Well, the lighting can be added, but it is better be separate layer, so it can be used above everything else (characters included) and add more 3D feel. But not make it so freakin contrast, like in Sub-Zera's image...also if we stick with lighting from windows, then thre must be windows and columns shadows on the floor. Better render it in 3D.

I'll give you an example:
This is my throne room edit with shadows:

It use 3 layers for shadows:
1 - behind columns/throne etc - http://s7.directupload.net/images/111012/yx8qzjwu.gif opacity is 35 here
2 - before anything except third shadows layer - http://s7.directupload.net/images/111012/wmm6vny3.gif opacity is 50
3 - before anything - http://s7.directupload.net/images/111012/g2yh5a3p.gif opacity is 20
