Desync = fast input commands?

Yes, it's another desync thread.

However I think there has been a misconception over desyncs.

It seems to be a universal accepted theory that desyncs are caused by one person not having certain DLC costume packs but I don't believe this is 100% true.

Awhile ago I posted a thread asking if inputting commands triggers a desync. It was either a thread or a post, but no one commented on it.

Now im about 90% sure that is one cause.

Every now and again, i'll play against someone, and if I input a certain attack string, the game desyncs. Lately this happens if I use Nightwolf and I go for a F3, 1, axe, axe, dash, F3, 1, 2 or shoulder. It's always on the last part, that sometimes the game desyncs. This also sometimes happens with Sheeva if I go for her 2,1,2,F1 combo. Now this doesnt happen with everyone, but if it does happen with one player, then 9/10 it will happen again with that same player.

I played a guy last night, and the game kept desyncing, sometimes during a combo of mine. He msg'd me saying "why are you desyncing the game?" I replied back that he probably doesnt have the packs. His reply (word for word): "I do have the packs mother****er, your button mashing which is causing the desync"

Now despite his a55hole reply, he has a point. Firstly, I don't mash. Due to the mechanics of the game, you can't really mash. I do input some commands extremely fast though.

This really is a problem now. I honestly believe that depending on who you are playing, that certain inputs cause a desync. This is quite frankly, ridiculous. I've NEVER played a fighting game where inputting a combo causes a desync, simply because I am quick fingered. And even if I was mashing, that SHOULD NEVER BE A REASON FOR A GAME TO DESYNC.

This is a problem that NRS, apparantly seems to be ignoring and it's quite frustrating. Yes they support the game with DLC characters, costumes, even balance patches but I think the vast majority of us would REALLY like NRS to focus on the online for awhile.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is something else, additional to DLC content and input commands that causes Desyncing. Desyncs being triggered, simply because someone is a bit dexterous on their control pad is quite ridiculous.

I'd like some positive feedback, opinions, rather than the obligatory "check your connection/have you got the packs". Yes I have a good connection and I have ALL THE FREE DLC costumes and still desyncs happen, in the fashion I have described.

It could be more than just inputs that desync the game. Sometimes you can be in king of the hill, waiting for your turn to play and then you desync. Other times you can be at the character select screen and about four people will vanish. You are never safe from a desync no matter what you do! Just being in a online game session, carries a risk for game desync like a disease.

This ^

At first I thought it was just people picking different costumes, but sometimes we get DC'd before character selection or even match voting in KOTH. Idk what causes it, perhaps a combo of all these things.

It's like solving the mysteries of the universe. I've had desyncs and lobbies close at so many different points I really can't make sense of it. There really is no rhyme or reason.

I TOTALLY agree with you bro! Seriously! I've had the EXACT SAME problem before! It still happens from time to time when I input my commands to quickly...

I think I know what is happening now.

Okay guys, if the game is desyncing before the match starts or at the character select, this is apparantly due to incompatability of packs.

If it desyncs during a game, it's because of button layout.

MK9, I would bet that you have a different button layout to the default setting like I do.

For instance, I have a Madcatz pad with 6 button layout and my layout is:
Top left is uppercut, middle top is block, bottom right is sweep.

I have my layout JUST LIKE THE ARCADE SETTING for MK1 to MK3. For some strange reasons, NRS did not make this kind of layout the default setting. So apparantly, if you change your control button layout, that can cause a desync. Also, pressing 2 buttons at once, can cause a desync. So characters like Sheeva, Quan Chi, Sonya and Baraka that have moves where 2 buttons are pressed together, can cause a desync. HOWEVER a desync can occur to anyone because of plinking.

Plinking is a means of players in fighting games of pressing buttons extremely fast to input commands. It's called plinking because it is akin to pressing the keys on a piano quickly. Anyways, it may interest some of you that pressing 3+1 activates a throw. However, if you plink 3 and 1 very quickly, even though you never pressed them simultaneously, the game registers this as a two button press. So if I go in with Night Wolf and go for his F3, 1...if I do it too fast he sometimes does a throw instead. That in itself is game breaking. But because the game registers this as a two button press occasionally, the game will...yes, desync.

This is being discussed on quite a few forums now including Test Your Might, so this is not my immagination.

This is very fine example of how TERRIBLE the MK 9 servers are. That pressing buttons too quickly can cause a desync. That changing the button layout on your pad or fightstick, can cause a desync. That picking an alt can cause a desync. That not downloading a DLC character or the free packs, can cause a desync.

I'm sorry, but i've been playing fighting games for years, and i've used the plinking method all my life. I can go into training room, and plink away. I plink a combo online, I get desynced.

NRS and Boon must be aware of this and I really, REALLY hope they can fix this because it is now making online unplayable.

If some of you guys suspect that your game is desyncing in the middle of combos and you have different button layouts to the default setting, go online and just press two attack buttons simultaneously over and over and I guarantee you will desync in quick fashion.

This has also been confirmed on the official mortal-kombat.com website in the technical section.

Button mapping and certain products are the problem. If you go to default settings you're good to go, so those of us that don't use default are fvcked. Also Mad Catz products, like their pads and fightsticks don't sync well with the game, though apparantly this can happen on the the normal 360/PS3 pads too.

BUMP!

So if you're desyncing during the middle of a combo, it's likely because you have custom buttons, due to either having a fightstick, fightpad or just preferences. Switching back to default buttons will eliminate this, yet this is an impossible option for those of us who are used to our custom layout.

A solution does exist, pretty extreme, but apparantly it works. Change things back to default and then rewire your fightpad/stick, so the wiring goes where you want. I'd seriously consider doing this as I use a Madcatz fightpad, but this means the pad would become useless for SF III and SSF IV. Well not useless, but id have to use custom made for those games, but at least those games wont crash as a result.

I actually wonder if this is something NRS are capable of fixing.

The online for this game is fail on so many levels. I mean christ, the servers are GAMESPY?! I didn't even know that, but have known Gamespy is notoriously bad for other online games.

Think im going to try this tomorrow and see what results I get.
