Fatalities

I just wanted to take some time to talk about the MK9 fatalities. Not your usual "all fatalities are just generic limb amputations" but how NRS have made them so accessible and practically killed them.

I used to play the old games when I was younger, mostly MK Trilogy. Now, being that I was young, I didn't really understand the game, I would pick a character, button bash and get my rectum promptly handed back to me by the "Novice" CPU. Following my defeat, or the odd win from me, I'd hear "Finish Him!", Now this gave me goosebumps because I knew potentially what was about to follow, a glorious visual that would involve one character completely obliterating the other, usually involving loads of blood and about 15 sets of rib cages. The only thing was, when I won the round and I was told to "Finish Him!", I'd look at my bit of paper with the fatality codes, just as I'm about to input the code ... BAM! YOU WIN! I'd waited too long, my opponent died by lack of excitement. I never did land a fatality in the old games, not once, no Brutality, Animality, Babality, nothing but I always found them amazing when, usually, the computer performed one on me.

So now I'm years older and I'm playing MK9. I'm a lot better then I used to be and I kind of understand fighting games a bit more, I pick a character, if I win the fight, I do a fatality and that's it, rinse and repeat. I'm love seeing all these fatalities that I'm pulling off with no beads of sweat running, no tears of frustration, just easy finger strokes. A little too easy, perhaps?

I feel like NRS have ruined fatalities, purely because they are so easy. If you search in google, MK/2/3 fatalities, you will get a list of button commands that might look something like this (Back, Down, Forward, Forward, High Kick) and if you search MK9 fatalities you will get something like (Down, Down, Back, Forward, 2), not much difference, right? But when you consider the old games gave you a couple of seconds to land your fatality, which pretty much gave you one chance to get it right, otherwise, no fatality. If you win a fight on MK9, it's like your given a whole new round to hit a fatality, bit of an exaggeration but, you should not be able to travel to the end of the screen, back to me, jump over me, "T-bag" for 10 minutes, jump back over me and THEN start your fatality.

Now before anyone thinks this thread is a moan at people who **** around when it says "Finish Him!", this is purely about the fatality timer. Don't you think that, if the timer were shorter, the fatalities would get more love because they wouldn't be so frequent. I feel like they are ruined because they are so easy to perform.

I'd say Fatalitys are easier, Anyone remember Shang tsungs MK2 Kintaro Fatality, lol worth it everytime tho

Wow, I never noticed it was different, i mean the Ultimate mortal kombat my friend had for his Gameboy was ridiculous i mean you literally had 2 seconds to land it and im not exaggerating. Yes, MK9 makes it too easy, I mean I memorized all fatalities, and if you didnt notice they gave all the MK Characters that were in MK v DC their Fatality input codes back.
Baraka:
His MKvDC Chest stab: F,F,D,D, X
His Arm slice off, and cut in half : F,F,D,D, X
His Cut-Cut-Stab-flip over: B, F, D, F, Square,
His Pick up with blade into the air and cut all limbs off: B, F, D, F, Square.

I agree with this to an extent.

But not that it was "ruined". I just think it took out a lot of the ooomph behind the fatalities. It's too awkward seeing your opponent fiddle around for a solid 5 seconds before you eventually just drop. Now, when someone pulls it off a matter of seconds after the game ends, it's more admirable.

But I mean come on, back then there was no worldwide multiplayer, no reason to be angry at the game for anything because it always followed through. I think THATS what hurt fatalities.

Ruined? Isn`t that being a little bit dramatic?

MK is infamous for it`s grotesques violence, particularly it`s fatalities. And considering that this is a "reboot" of the series, making the kombos and fighting easier in general would make their game more successful, again, giving everybody a chance to perform a fatality (or babality or stage fatality, etc) without getting disappointed that the couldn`t. Believe me, probably 90% of new MK gamers purchased this game to experience the awesome experience of their first fatality.

But, I do see where your coming from. In a way it is an ultimate reward to end your opponents life in such a graphic way, and the harder a challenge is to overcome the more satisfaction you get from completing it.

I can still remember MK 2 and having my best bud do the fatalities for me because I just couldn`t do them (not sure if this was my utter lack of gaming skills at the time or what) and I loved it that I could perform fatalities (almost) effortlessly in the new reboot. Even though there are still a few I couldn`t do to save my life...

Overall: Easier fatalities = good thing! (mostly)

I think the fatalities r boring itself..in mk9 atleast. they were exciting in the beginning, but then got boring quick, especially since most of them r jus from previous games or don't fit the character. laos buzzsaw was in mksm, mileenas body rip is kira's in mkd, both of shangs tsungs are jokers gunshot from mkvdc or kangs soul possesion from mkd. quan chis 2nd was originally scorps and it doesn't fit him at all. I can keep goin. I feel like nrs got lazy with fatalities, especially with the slice point system. some fatalities are epic, such as noobs make a wish and kabals it takes guts, but most of them are rather boring. we NEED a fatality dlc pack ASAP

The fatalities are perfect but no matter how hard they are to do they get repetitive. But I like to mix things up when it says FINISH HIM lol so for example if I'm Johnny Cage and I have my full X Ray I'll activate it just so he says "Come on" and then I do the fatality right afterward so I used his X Ray as like an epic taunt.

Or just to mess with someone let's say I'm Sektor and I have a full X Ray I'll go to the other side of the screen and make it look like I'm going to do a fatality but I just shoot the X Ray. :)

But the worst has to be Stryker. I'll finish them off with an X Ray right before they automatically fall down so that + his win pose = Like 5 minutes after it says finish him/her XD

you dont get it..... nrs made it easier... to perform fatalities and gives you more time... becuz it was harder to perform in mk1 2 and mk3 ..... so they made it easier with some extra time to perform..... and easier buttons to perform..... i dont get why your complaining if you want wanna do a fatality.. just punch him...

Kabal's nomad dash is an awesome finisher, Kabal starts to do his winpose when is still spinning and when Kabal cross the hookswords the opponents falls, is so Power Ranger style

OP, Ed Boon said before the game was released that he and NRS were really aiming to please the CASUAL (people who hardly play video games, or even know what MK is, for that matter) and HARDCORE (MK Fans, competitive gamers, anyone who says Fatalities are ruined/ too easy/ blah/ etc) players alike.

So, no, Fatalities aren't "ruined" just because they're made simpler and you can do them in 5 seconds instead of 2. I can see what you mean by the loss of intensity and difficulty compared to the early MK Fatalities, but its not that bad.

LOL I gotta try that one! There's so many cool hidden ways to finish off your opponent without a fatality

their's more time in performing Fatalities in MK9.. Shang Tsung's MK2 Kintaro Fatality was hard to pull off, after the one millionth time pulled it off
