I wouldn't say she was completely useless, she the only way Light and Mikami could communicate without seeing each other in person and light knew he hit that on the side in the hotel room 8)
 
Monster is so good. I love the art style and the german setting. It doesn't overdo it its just subtle references to modern german history and stuff. Its really dark as well and there are some truly f***ed up characters in it.
