Reading other threads here made me realize a lot of folks' first MK 1 experience was on consoles, which in turn made me wonder if there was ever a good port of the game released. Some of it was because of hardware limitations of the time, and some because of things beyond control like Nintendo's censorship policy, but none of the console ports did the game any justice. The Sega version was probably closest in terms of gameplay, but the Genesis just didn't have the power to pull off the graphics and sound correctly. The SNES version had the graphics, but the controls were molasses and of course the whole issue with changing fatalities and "sweat".
Even recent releases (included in compilations and plug in devices) don't seem to be 100%, either the audio isn't right or the gameplay speed is off. I seem to to recall the PC version being fairly accurate but it's been nearly 20 years since I've played it. I'm sure even if I could track down a copy it probably won't run on a modern PC correctly anyway.
Of course there's always MAME, guaranteed to be accurate since it's a dump of the arcade ROM, but it always was odd to me the game that started it all never got its just due when it comes to a home release.
