Today we've got the first confirmation of the assumption that <a href="http://www.trmk.org/games/mortal_kombat_9/">Mortal Kombat 9</a> will be returning to it's former M rated glory, after the T rated <a href="http://www.trmk.org/games/mortal_kombat_vs_dc_universe/">Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe</a>. That confirmation comes from <a href="http://www.twitter.com/noobde"> Ed Boon's personal Twitter stream</a> via a series of updates earlier today while discussing some motion capture work that was in progress at for <a href="http://www.trmk.org/games/mortal_kombat_9/">Mortal Kombat 9</a>.

Ed Boon (@noobde): <a href="http://twitter.com/noobde/status/2225710961">Motion capturing special moves & fatalities today....they are kind of sick !!</a>

Ed Boon: <a href="http://twitter.com/noobde/status/2227298171">Carlos & Rick O. doin some kool fatalities. I hope we aren't taking these too far. :(</a>

Me (@McCarron): <a href="http://twitter.com/McCarron/status/2227322547">@noobde If you are not sure if you are taking them too far, that means you can go further.</a>

Ed Boon: <a href="http://twitter.com/noobde/status/2228204957">@McCarron U r absolutely right. People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK.</a>

Ed Boon: <a href="http://twitter.com/noobde/status/2228220255">still...they are sick. :\</a>

I think this is great news, as it shows that the MK Team is attempting to push the envelope of the M rating in <a href="http://www.trmk.org/games/mortal_kombat_9/">Mortal Kombat 9</a>. I believe they will be amping up the violence to a level which is expected from <b>Mortal Kombat</b>. It sounds very much in the direction the team was going in before the DC Comics crossover opportunity presented itself. That would be great news, as it means they have had plenty of time to let ideas grow and evolve over the past few years. I know I personally can't wait to see it.

As a funny side note, Ed also threw in a great joke later giving a new subtitle to <b>Mortal Kombat 9</b>: <a href="http://twitter.com/noobde/status/2228255801">"Attack of the Nuns: Get in the Habbit !!"</a>. Seems that he has dropped the "Attack of the Dogs" line and added in Nuns instead.

Well you just gotta love that. Though, how much Violence does an M rating allow? For us, over the top gore will be classified as MA15+ (Australian). I'm not sure if an M for you Americans is MA15+ for us.

Thanks for bringing it back up to the top (of the ESRB rating scale 0_o). Hopefully it will turn out to be great.

I haven't bought an MK game since MKSM. I just find the replay value on the new MK fighters to be lacking. The challenges aren't how they were like in the 2D games with a whole bunch of different characters lined up to fight. MKDA sucked for this reason, and I don't think I lasted longer than a month playing it.

After MKA, I think it's going to be really hard for MK to out beat that roster since just about every MK character was in it, and it reminds me of MK Trilogy where after that game they switched to 3D MK. I still find MK Trilogy to be the best MK game due to the replay value even if some would disagree because of the bugs in that game, which I don't find noticeable unless you're actually looking for them.

I hope they spend more time on the fighting aspect of the game this time instead of spending so much time on a Konquest mode. We have storyline games already (MKSM was good) so I think for the fighting games they should just focus on the fighting part of it. I don't know about the newer games such as Deception and MKA, but the Endurance rounds in the 2D MKs were fun where you had to fight 2-3 characters one after the other. It added more challenge to it.

M rating is 17+ in the states.

Yeah, I saw most of this "develope" on Twitter also. It was funny.

I understand, but why they cant and never hold to that idea is beyond me.

I also find it funny that I post the same "story" on another MK forum, and it shows up almost identically some 30-40 minutes later on MKO.

This just put a big smile on my face. I know we all saw it coming a mile away, but still, I don't smile much these days. I'll take it.

With as much crap other games get away with, (god of war with boobs, blood, ripping people apart, Gears with chainsawing someone in half, head shots that splatter) i dont see why MK shouldnt be able to get away with this kind of things too. Yeah thats right, bring on the first topless female MK character who rips people apart, chainsaws them in half and makes their head splatter...lol

Besides fatalities did you ask him about secret characters and other secrets like in MK and MK2? I mean have non-selectable secret characters like Jade, Smoke, Noob Saibot from MK2 or similar to Gouki and Gouken in SFIV

Yeah, its been dissapointing with hidden things within the games as of late. I want that feeling back in games that there are things waiting to be unlocked. Searching for them is half the fun.

It was easier in the old days to create random generic junk thugh, what with the colours swap ninjas.

Be freaking awesome if Boon went to the MK fans this time, and allowed more of an MK community hands-on into the development of the new game. I am sure the community has some good fatality ideas floating around, ideas on some cool new characters, and who we like to see return. I know its asking a lot, but it would be awesome if it happened.

Personally, I would like to see some disemboweling. Dismemberment, stabbing and burning are getting old.

This honestly doesn't surprise or excite me. I'm sorry, but it doesn't. We all knew it was going to be an M rated game from the get-go, I just don't see what's to get excited about here.
