Due to the big news yesterday we decided to push Mortal Movie Monday off to Tuesday this week.

This week's feature presentation is the featurette Behind Mortal Kombat 3: Into The Outworld, which details the creation of Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 original arcade and home versions. This piece was chosen due to celebrate Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon being selected this week as one of the Hot 100 Game Developers of 2009 by EDGE but also one of the Top 100 Game Creators of all time by IGN.

Behind Mortal Kombat 3: Into The Outworld was a piece of promotional material used to promote the upcoming Mortal Kombat 3. I even remember coming across this on a local Chicago television channel once by accident, I used to have it on VHS somewhere. It was later included along with Midway Arcade Treasures that shipped with Mortal Kombat 3. It's also one of the most in-depth behind the scenes looks into the creation of a Mortal Kombat game.

So for those who haven't seen it yet before, I hope you enjoy a look into the creation of the final traditional 2D Mortal Kombat game.

Great stuff. I don't think I've ever gotten to see this in its entirety before.

I just noticed the "CHEWS YOUR FIGHTER" on the early Prototype select screen that Ed had up there.

seen it before

Yeah a lot of the videos we'll be putting up are not new, but may be new to a whole different crowd of viewers. That's the mission of this weekly project.

It's fun to look back at these and see what was going through their heads. The sad answer is...in reference to Ed Boon, exactly the same thing as now. He was still goofy with wild, goofy, and often lame ideas that somehow made their way into the final product. I want somebody who's serious about making a solid GAME to get on board with MK. Boon's a dreamer, but I just don't like the direction he took the franchise without Tobias around to stop him.

Thanks a LOT for that video, I've actually never seen it before!
It reminds me of how much I loved MK.

Great insight into the making of MK3, a real gem.

Thanks again!
